The Movie

Some Workers at a dyers are treated like second-class citizens by their new Manchu bosses so they ask Gordon Liu, a scam artist, to impersonate Monk San-Te, the famous monk who started the 36th chamber. 

The Manchus catch on the Gordon Liu's antics and treat the workers harsher. Gordon Liu goes off to Shaolin and meets up priest San-Te. 

While at Shaolin, Gordon Liu works works the scaffold for repairs on the Shaolin roof. Through his hard work and peeps at the Shaolin members training, Gordon Liu inadvertently learns kung fu (Roof-top kung fu). 

He doesn't realize this gain until he takes on the Manchus to help his friends at the dyers.
