Junkers Airline Activities
( 1919 to 1932 )

The following table shows the transportation figures of Junkers Luftverkehr between 1919 and 1925. Most of the datas are taken from Wolfgang Wagner: Der deutsche Luftverkehr - Die Pionierjahre 1919-1925, Bernard & Graefe Verlag, Koblenz, 1987, ISBN 3-7637-5274-9, which is highly recommended to those interested in the development of Germany's initial airline history. If you have further Junkers airtraffic figures, please let me know.

Junkers Luftverkehr Network Development:

The following table represents the Junkers airline network of summer 1925. Planned expansions of this final Junkers network and some prior routings are also mentioned. Major Routes of the 1925 Junkers network were the Scandinavian routes from Helsinki via Stockholm and Kopenhagen to Amsterdam, London and the Ruhrgebiet as well as the Baltic routes from Helsinki via Konigsberg to Berlin. On the South end of the network the major route led from Geneve via Zurich and Munich to Vienna and Budapest. The internal German routes were the route from Gleiwitz and Breslau via Dresden, Leipzig and Erfurt to Essen in the Ruhrgebiet, the routing from Berlin and Leipzig towards Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Zurich as the continuation of the Helsinki-Stockholm route and some direct routes to and from Berlin to other German cities.

Most of those routes were directed via Berlin, so that most Junkers destinations could be reached from Berlin. Nevertheless, Berlin was not really the crossbridge of the Junkers network, where to change from one direction to another. Instead this role was taken over by Leipzig, where passengers could change from the Silesia-Ruhrgebiet line onto the Berlin-Munich route or via Zurich to the Geneve-Budapest route. Both Helsinki routes via Stockholm and via Konigsberg had further connections from Berlin to Leipzig, where passengers could switch over to the other lines. Therefore Leipzig was the actual hub and crossbridge of the Junkers network in 1925. Minor hubs were the airport of Zurich with connections to Munich and to Berlin or Helsinki, Hamburg with connections to Amsterdam and London or to the Ruhrgebiet and Munich with inner German connections towards Budapest. The Ruhrgebiet, Frankfurt and Erfurt were airports with a high frequency of daily flights, but they did not over any connections between those flights as they were operated on different times.
