Our own little rendezvous...
Karen and I wanted a little get-away-time just for ourselves. We found it in a little town called "Idylwilde". We rented a bungalow just for the two of us just outside of town. It was a bit chilly, at times, but it had all the charm of the small town where Karen was brought up in Iowa.
The only historical marker in the town was this totem pole. Not very authentic and not all that old. But it did give the town a distinctive landmark.
The only other landmark of any significance was this huge granite edifice not far from the town. We could see rock climbers braving the face and the one steep side while we were there. We actually drove the car up to a point close to it and retreated smartly when rain began to fall.
One place that did grab our attention was the "Iron Garden". It was very cloudy the day we were there and the pictures I took were just too dark to do it justice. But the man who had lived there (now dead) collected a huge variety of iron items: old saws, rails, wheels, tools, chains, etc. Some he mounted on wood; others he welded together in the most beautiful of ways. It was quite unique. We even had a guide. Wonderful!
This table was formed entirely of a length of huge chain and some planks for the top and seats. An amazing piece that has withstood not only time, but inclement weather, as well.
And, if you can tell me what this is, you are either very old or just plain lucky. My wife knew. (hint: farm)
The rest of our time was spent in our little bungelow reading by the fire. There was a television there that we didn't really watch a lot, a kitchen there that we didn't really cook much, and squirrels in the morning that we really didn't see that often. But there was big old bed with warm covers that we really did spend time in. Lots of time...
