 Watase Yuu's shoujo-fave series Fushigi
Yuugi and was shown in Japan in 1995-96 with 52 episodes,
then it was aired in Manila by GMA-7 as part of its Animé
Assault. This show tells of the story of two best
friends, Miaka Yuuki and Yui (Julie)Hongo, who discovers
the book "Shijin Tenchi Sho" ("The Book of
the Four Gods of Heaven and Earth") while studying
in the library for their high school entrance exams. They
both get teleported to a new world . In this new world
there exist 4 rival countries, Konan (South), Kutou (West),
Hokkan (North) and Sailo (East), each protected by their
own gods. These gods can only be summoned by Mikos or
priestess who are young girls who comes from other worlds.
Miaka is identified as the girl who was foretold in the
book to become the powerful Priestess of the Southern
Region, which is the Konan (which is like ancient China).
It is her mission to gather together all of the Seven
Star Warriors from the book, or she will never be able to
return to her home again. Her best friend Yui becomes the
Seiryuu No Miko, protector of Kutou and mortal rival of
Suzaku No Miko. Over the love of Tamahome, a Suzaku
Seishi, the two best friends gather their forces in a
battle to the death.
 In the
Fushigi Yuugi universe, the sky is divided up into four
quadrants, those being: north, south, east and west. Each
of these has exactly seven constellation dedicated to
them. Each of the seishi are named them. This comes from
the mythology of ancient China.
South: In the
south is the Konan County. It is protected by the god
Suzaku, a red phoenix. It represents the season of summer
and the element of fire.
West: In the
east is the Kutou Country. It is protected by the god
Seiryuu, a blue dragon. It represents the season of
autumn and the element of water.
North: In the
north is the Hokkan County. It is protected by the god
Genbu, a brown turtle. It represents the season of winter
and the element of earth. .
East: In the
east is the Sailo County. It is protected by the god
Byakko, a white tiger. It represents the season of spring
and the element of wood.

The cross dressing
seishi, who is in love with Hotohori, he revealed
later that he dresses as a girl in memory of his
sister. His abilities are his super human
strength. He died defending Miaka against

The healer Mitsukake was
found by Miaka in a state of depression since the
death of his beloved Shoka, but was reawakened
when he found out that Shoka, who was possed by a
demon was terrorizing a village, he tried to save
Shoka and Miaka but in order to save Miaka he
have to destroy the demon and Shoka together with
it. He eventually saved Miaka and came to terms
that Shoka was already dead, so he dedicated his
life to helping the Suzaku no Miko. He is often
seen with his cat, Tama. He later died saving a
kid, even after being seriously injured in the
batlle between Kutou and Konan. His symbol,
"Shin" is located on the plam of his
hand. |

He leads the thieves of
Mt. Leikaku, and uses a Halisen (Iron Fan) as a
weapon to to cause Retsuka Shin-en, or Holy Fire
against his enemies. He is sometimes rude and
stupid but he is a loyal friend and is
trustworthy. His mark "Yoku" is located
on his right forearm. |

Miaka's best friend since
they were kids despite their different
personalities. She is intelligent and highly
athletic, the total opposite of Miaka. She
accepted her position as the Seiryuu no Miko,
when she thought that Miaka abandoned her. She
also fell in love with Tamahome and battled Miaka
for his love. She regretted everything in the end
and sealed the Seiryuu's powers in the end to
save Miaka, Tamahome and Tokyo. |

Soi was sold to a brothel
when she was young and was rescued by Nakago. She
then pledged her life and love to serve him. Her
powers includes controlling lightning and she can

protecting Nakago from Tasuki's blade. Her mark

has astonishing powers and can even fight all of
the Suzaku seishis head-on . The only thing that
makes Nakago tick is his lust for power, and he
wanted the Seiryuu's last wish for himself. He
was revealed to serve the dark lord Tenko in the
OVA series. His mark is the "Shin"
located on his forehead. |

Miko's sworn enemy before. He infiltrated the

seishi a number of times. His mark is "Ko"
located on his right shoulder. |
