**WARNING** - may contain little spoilers.
This story is placed in the year 1868, when the Meiji government is still young and some corrupted politicians still run the country. Some people are disillusioned with the current government in Japan and have the intent of overthrowing the government. That's when a man who goes by the name of Himura Kenshin steps in. For ten years, he wandered through Japan helping those who needs help. And one of those people was Kaoru, an ecstatic and optimistic 17 year old girl. When she found out he was the legendary Hitokiri Battousai, she told him that he could stay at her dojo since she didn't care about his past. All in all, he fights in the name of justice and he tries to save lives in the process without shedding blood.
Throughout the story we learn of his interesting and yet very sad past. We also see how Kenshin plays a part in everyone's lives and how much it affects them. The story's also about how he's haunted by people from his past and tries his best to defend those whom he loves from them.
