THE NATURE OF SCIENCE LEARNING

Learning about science is quite possibly one of the most important things a student can do.  Especially since, as David A. Sousa said in his article "Are We Teaching High School Science Backwards?", Students are growing up in a world in which " . . . the major problems will reflect how wisely we use science . . ." (Sousa 9)  Throughout their educational career, students are impacted by science, not only in the classroom, but all around them.  This is one of the most important aspects of science learning, making the connections between what is learned in the classroom and the world around the students.  As I have explained in my "Nature of Science," science surrounds us everyday, and we interact with it.  In order for students to learn all they can about science, they must be made aware of it's constant presence, and hopefully become more interested in what is happening around them.
For some students, science is a very easy subject to master.  They think along very analytical lines, and thus their thinking lends itself to the traditional ways in which science is taught.  While these students will excel, and they should not be ignored, the students that require the most help from a science educator are the ones who do not think analytically.  The ones who have a different way of looking at the world.  These students must be made to see that science is important to them as well, and be shown ways to learn science that are a little less traditional.
All students need to be made aware of, and learn about science.  The students who are more inclined to science will have an easier time learning about it and picking up the concepts and perhaps the more abstract ideas, but we must be able to cater to the students are more inclined to English and Art as well.  If one student walks away from a science class not understanding what has happened, then they have not learned.  While learning about science can seem overbearing and complicated at first, it is important to remember that it is a subject like any other, and broken down the right way, it can be as easily managed as any other.
