Krub, I just did more search and found out several
sources to debate on that the classic story of Vasily Zaitsev and his
enemy Koenig was real, wasn't it? Or it was just a russian propaganda.

The
duel between Zaitsev and Thorvald (also refered to as Koenig in other
reports) has long been contested as to its historical accuracy. One
such comment is well worth repeating and I have agreed to add it to
Sniper Country as it does have merit.

In
the best-selling book Stalingrad, The fateful siege : 1942-1943, Antony
Beevor wrote: ‘The whole story of the sniper duel is fiction. There is
absolutely no trace (of it) in the German military archives...or in the
Red Army files which concentrated on sniper activities (the daily
reports of the Political Department of Stalingrad Front to Moscow).
This great story can be classified as Soviet propaganda. So who’s
right? Well, the argument has been raging between academic historians
for decades and, sadly, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever know the truth
for certain. Given that truth is the first casualty of both war and
propagandeering, and that Stalin’s totalitarian Russia excelled at
both, the true separation of fact and legend is probably lost forever...

Annaud's
critics accuse him of naively - or cynically - accepting a classic
piece of Soviet propaganda as true. While Zaitsev did exist, they say,
he was not the best sniper, just the best-looking for picture purposes.
More to the point, there is no evidence of a Major Konig in any German
or Russian archives. The duel never happened: the Soviet propaganda
machine invented it.
http://www.snipercentral.com/konig.htm There
is great debate over wether the legendary WWII German sniper that was
sent to Stalingrad to dispatch of Vasili Zaitzev was Konig, Thorvald,
or even wether he existed at all. In fact in the actual Soviet war
records, it originally showed up as a Maj. Erwin Konig, which is in
fact a very basic and plain German Name at the time. In Vasili
Zaitsev's war memoirs, he later refers to him as Heinz Thorvald, which
was yet another popular German name in that time period. Thorvald seems
to be the name that is used more now, and its confusing as to which it
was, and if they were the same person, or one was a mistake, or wether
the German Super Sniper was fabricated by the Soviet press to represent
the German army, or German snipers on a "whole", and that the story was
just a means of providing morale for the Soviet troops. The two names
are on official Soviet war records, but there is no record of either
name in the German record books (not to say they couldn't have removed
the name to save grace). Any way you look at it, its confusing and
debatable. Since both names appear in Soviet propaganda and war
records, Konig in early war records and Thorvald in Zaitsevs memoirs
and in later war records, I have included them both on the list until
there is concrete proof that one or the other, or both, did not exist.

Based
on a true story (though researchers are divided on its true extent),
War of the Rats, by David L. Robbins, is a gripping read from the
beginning to the end.

But
the film has already sparked controversy by its blending of fact and
fiction, and its dramatisation of a battle that has assumed mythic
status as one of the turning points of the Second World War. History is
hot now in Hollywood, but it seems to be getting mangled in the
cinematic re-telling. It is the age-old dilemma of dramatising great
events in human history: how far should entertainment triumph over
truth? Where Hollywood is concerned, it's usually entertainment that
wins. .. and .. But German military documents have no
record of a Major Koenig fighting a duel with Zaitsev, says Beevor.
"There is no trace of this famous incident in any reports on the
snipers' activities sent by the political department of Stalingrad
front, which certainly would have been sent back. Nobody has found any
trace of the so-called Major Koenig, commandant of a sniper school, who
was sent to Stalingrad."
6. One of well-known historian,
Anthony Beevor, wrote in "Stalingard" (Penguin, 1999) denying the duel
of Zaitsev and Koenig scene. Here is probably some good backups for
this author and the credibility of his book. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/war/wwtwo/soviet_german_war_06.shtml http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:irMEdP3M5m8J:www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1373/is_8_49/ai_55481494+anthony+beevor&hl=en
By
the way, I may assume that no one will ever find if this classic fight
did ever exist. But I just doubt the credibility of this story. And
thank you krub for your WW II story, I am one of the true followers.
