| What is Bleach? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It is a clear, pale, yellow or greenish liquid, producing a sharp pungent odor. It is chemically a dilute solution made up of soduim hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite which kills bacteria and destroys colored organic materials by oxidizing them. Which means bleach is an oxidizing agent, a reactant that removing electrons from reactants in a chemical reaction. Oxidizing agents cause other substances to be oxidized in chemical reactions while they themselves are reduced. It is mostly used in household cleaning, laundry, swimming pools, and water treatment. It can be shipped by tank truck and/or rail car. Then it can be stored in tanks, drums, and/or tote tanks. You most likely have experienced with bleach when doing your laundry. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Some Questions and Answers You May Have About Bleach? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Is liquid bleach highly toxic or bad for the environment? Liquid bleach starts as salt water and ends as salt water. When used in the laundry, virtually all the liquid bleach reacts and is converted back into salt water. What little reaction byproducts remain are effectively handled by waste water treatment. Does bleach brake your fabric down? When used properly, liquid bleach does not affect life of fabric. Test show that even after 50 wash cycles, fabric washed in detergent with bleach, is just as resilient as fabric washed in detergent alone. Is chorine and liquid bleach the same thing? Actually they aren't. The term "chlorine bleach" is actually misleading. What's in the bottle is sodium hypochlorite, the active ingredient in liquid bleach. Although chlorine is used to manufacture soduim hypochlorite, there is no free chlorine in bleach. |
