Spearheading D-Day: American Special Units in Normandy

by Gordon Rottman

For those interested in the Normandy landing, US Army amphibious operations, and related subjects I came across an excellent book called "Spearheading D-Day: American Special Units in Normandy" by Jonathan Gawne and published by Historie and Collections in France, 1998 (its in English). 8-1/2 x 12-inch format, 288 pages. I got it through the Military Book Club for $29.00.

On the outside this looks like another coffee table book, but it is full of extremely detailed information on numerous unique units participating in the landing. The chapters discuss the Assault Training Centre, landing craft, the assault troops and their landing organization, Navy demolition units, regimental combat teams, Rangers and Marines, Naval beach battalions, engineer special brigades, and various misc. specialized units. There are hundreds of photos, most of which have never been published along with detailed computer generated diagrams and illustrations of equipment, weapons, uniforms, insignia, etc. This is truly a masterpiece and a must for anyone interested in the subject. I found very few errors or omissions and these were very minor. By the way, airborne units are not included.

Highly recommended.
