The Mid Murray Lands
Local History Group
Swan Reach and district
A magnificent living specimen of a canoe tree at Moorunde (mid-ways between Swan Reach and Blanchetown)

The locality known as Moorunde in 1839 was granted by the Government to the explorer (Edward John Eyre) who was appointed protector of Aborigines.

Moorunde was garrisoned by a detachment of the 96th Regiment and mounted police. In the face of European settlement the local Aboriginal population declined.

It is likely the bark from this old river red gum was cut by native craftsmen before white settlement of Australia.
