Excellency,

Thank You for the "Letter from Bucharest", Summer 2000, an interesting publication, where reference was made to the "Romanian model of ethnic relations" and we would like to inform you as follows:

No doubt, everybody in Romania would like the ethnic relations to be the best, but while these relations are indeed very good regarding the ethnic groups of Germans, Armenians, Turks, etc. the relations between Romanians and Hungarians - just a part of this group - are only apparent good and indeed, they are far to be resolved, because of the activity of the chauvinist-racist wing of UDMR.

We informed many times the Press and different Publications, the Human Rights Organizations, the US Embassy in Bucharest, etc. about serious, even incredible and inconceivable Human Rights violations perpetrated by this chauvinist wing of UDMR and we feel obliged to remind you once more about just a few of such Human Rights abuses committed by them, as mentioned in the attached letter addressed to the Romania's Supreme Court.

We want to emphasize that by these Human Rights violations this extremist wing of UDMR is undermining the very basic values and principles of the human society.

By the way, while all other countries asked for excuses for the Human Rights violations they committed - please see the attached document - Hungary and UDMR never apologized to Romania for the crimes they committed against the Romanian nation, which proves that they didn't reach yet the moral standard of the rest of the world.

On the contrary, the letter sent by former chief of the Hungarian Foreign Office, Geza Jeszinsky to Ion Iliescu, President of Ronania at that time, protesting against the frequent citation of the atrocities committed by the Hungarians in Transylvania, proves that they are even trying to conceal the crimes committed, crimes which in no way can be wiped out from history.

That's why we think that a genuine "model of relations" between the two countries and nations could start only when Hungary and UDMR will ask officially Romania for forgiveness for all the crimes they committed against the Romanian nation, and when they are willing to compensate for the crimes, murders and for the damages they caused to the 500.000 Romanians expelled from Northern Trnsylvania in the period 1940-1944 and later, in 1990 the about 4.000 Romanians expelled from Harghita and Covasna, and when the permanently perpetrators of those Human Rights Violations and abuses, the always social and political trouble makers, that chauvinist-racist wing of UDMR will be definitely eliminated from the political life of Romania.

While the United States apologized to the Indians for all wrong-doings over the centuries, and the same apologies were addressed also to the Blacks of America, while all other countries apologized for all crimes and Human Rights violations committed in the past, while even His Sanctity Pope John Paul II asked for forgiveness for all injustices done by the Catholic Church in recent times and in past centuries, why should Hungary and the Hungarians not apologize to Romania ?

They have to apologize for:

- mass killing of the 40.000 Romanian civilians in Transylvania, by the Hungarian army after the 1848 revolution,

- the destroying of 230 Romanian villages by the Hungarian army also after the 1848 revolution.

- for the expulsions of around 500,000 Romanians from Northern Transylvania in the period of its occupation, in a kind of forerunner type of recently expulsions from Kosovo, In the Report of the Foreign Affairs Minister of Romania of 1947 for the Peace Conference of Paris we find: "In the first months of occupation of Northern Transylvania it was to be seen endless killings, tortures, maltreatments, robberies and destructions. The criminal, savage terror was extended from one end of the occupied Norther Transylvania to the other. Priests, intellectuals and peasants were abused, tortured and killed, homes, churches, and ccultural institution were demolished"

- for the totally prohibition of the ethnic non-Magyar schools in their own languages. Even the Confessional Schools of the non-Magyar nations were prohibited. Although in Transylvania the Romanians were over 75% of the whole population, they did not have any kind of school in their own language, and the Hungarian administration went as far as to prohibit the Romanian language in Courts and other public institution; they tried to prohibit it's usage even on the streets. Oskar Wittstock, a German intellectual, wrote in " Leipziger Vierteljahreschrift fgr Sgdosteuropa ", under the title "Sprachkampf in Transylvania", (The War of Languages in Transylvania): "The Appony's Education Law is the supreme creation of the Hungarian chauvinismus".

And further the Hungarians have to apologize to the Romanians for:

- the about 500.000 civilian Romanians expelled from Northern Transylvania during the occupation of this territory, in a forerunner art of recently Kosovo expulsions.

- for the destruction of 33 Romanian Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Churches, and moreparish houses and cultural institutions during the occupation of Northern Transylvania.

- around 4,000 more Romanians expelled in 1990 from the counties of Harghita and Covasna,

* * *

Recently, Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi A. Annan, wrote some very interesting considerations about "The era of Human Rights" and "The final goal of the Human Rights" and we think that these considerations could be applied also in our relations with the Hungarians, which means that the United Nations and some other Western countries could urge Hungary to ask Romania for forgiveness for the all crimes committed along the centuries against Romania and the Romnian nation.

During WW I Romania entered the war along the Allied Powers with the aim to regain Transylvania. In this war about 800,000 Romanian soldiers died fighting the Germans and Austro-Hungarians. There were many Romanian volunteers in the Romanian army coming from Transylvania.

During the WW II, on August 23, 1944 Romania turned the arms against the Germans. This war, which for Romania lasted 263 days - from August 23, 1944 to May 12, 1945 - started at a time when Nazi Germany was far from being defeated.

It is appreciated that King Michael of Romania's decision to turn the arms against the Germans had very important consequences for the victory of the Allied forces. Between August 23, 1944 - August 31, 1944 the Romanian Army crashed the german forces in Central, Southeastern and Southwestern parts of the country, causing the enemy casualties equivalent to six Divisions. (Mihai Fatu and Mircea Musat, "Horthyst-Fascist Terror in Northern Transylvania " - September 1940 - October 1944 -, Meridiane Publishing House, Bucharest 1986, p.305). Thus, the German strategic position in the Balkans, the key to maintaining the Nazi domination over the area, was badly shaken.

The historic Act of Romania on August 23, 1944 was perceived by international public opinion as a major event, as a military and political revolution. The echo caused by this event and Romania's contribution to shorten the Second World War was reflected in numerous reports, letters, telegrams, memoirs or articles expressing the reactions and impressions of official representatives of the Allied Countries assigned for special missions in Romania, (p. 306).

"News Agencies, the Press, Radio Stations in various parts of the world reported on the events and their implications in international spheres, (p. 307).

"Romania's decision to cooperate as a co-belligerent was an event of paramount importance for the subsequent course of WW II, since it changed the political and military situation in Southeast Europe in favor of the anti-hitlerite coalition. The Daily Herald noted on August 24, 1944 that the strategic effect of the extraordinary event would be the military collapse of the German operations system, while in political terms it would remove German influence from Southeast Europe", (p. 307).

"On August 25, 1944 the London Radio commented that Romania's gesture would have deep-going effects on Hungary, Bulgaria and Finland", (p. 309).

Historical research has revealed the tremendous significance attached by the German High Command and by Hitler himself, to the Danube strategic line on the years 1944-1945.

"In the final stage of WW II, the Nazi leaders concentrated numerous military forces on thatline, bringing them from other fronts, which consequently weakened Wehrmacht's defensive capabilities in other parts of Europe", (p. 321).

The well known British military theoretician and historian B. H. Lindellart, noted that the Nazi Reich had employed a tremendous amount of German forces to check the Allied advance along the Danube, described as the side gate of Germany.

The human capital engaged in the anti-Hitler war, places Romania as fourth, according to statements made in British Parliament in January 1945.

The recorded casualties amounted to 169,822 officers and men, of whom 21,035 dead, 90,344 wounded and 58,443 missing (Mihai Fatu, Mircea Musat, ibidem and Ioan Scurtu, Gh. Buzatu "Istoria Romanilor in sec. XX" , Edit. Paideia, Buc. 1999).

As a result of these efforts, and the role played by shortening the war, Romania's contribution to the victory of May 1945 received broad international recognition, (p. 323).

In Great Britain, before the Parliament, both Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden were highly appreceative of Romania's contribution to the victory of May 1945, (p. 323). and US President Harry Truman awarded His Majesty King Mihai of Romania the Citation for the Legion of Merit, Degree of Chief Commander, mentioning that "By His superior judgement, his boldness of action and the high character of his personal leadership, King Mihai I has made an outstanding contribution to the cause of freedom and democracy, (see please the attached copy of this document).

The US official broadcast also on February 9, 1945 a significant commentary on Romania's contribution to the war against Hitler, while the Paris Radio on January 13, 1946 broadcast a commentary saying that "France considers Romania contributed toward shortening of war at least six months" (p.324).

Post-war historiography in various countries of the world acknowledged, on basis of scientific research, the important role played by Romania in defeating Hitler's 3rd Reich and its great service to the Allied cause, (p. 324).

The above mentioned are only a few of the most significant opinions, accounts and statements with regard to Romania's contributions to the victory of WW II, as well as to the shortening of WW II by more than six months.

But after such eulogy regarding Romania's contributions to the Allies' victory, even before the end of the war, at the secret meeting of Yalta in February 1945, they accepted 90%; Soviet influence over Romania, (see, please, the attached copy of the document), and the Soviet troops had the police and political role to force on Romania the communist regime, (Octavian D. Capatina "The Towns of Transylvania" , Negoiu Publisher, Cluj-Napoca, 1994, p. 21).

During the occupation of Northern Transylvania, 1940-1944 the Hungarians of this territory entered the horthyst organization MADOSZ, which formed the basis of the Hungarian administration.

"In 1945, when Transylvania became again part of Romania, all Madosz members entered the communist Party" (Idem, Ibidem). For more details see, please, the attached copies of Octavian D. Capatina, p. 21-22.

In "History of the Romanian Communist Party", Hoover Institution Press, California, 1979, the American historian Robert King writes that "the Romanian communist Party acted in Transylvania through the Hungarian Popular Union "MADOSZ", which in 1945 had 250,000members. This Hungarian Union contributed to the communist terror apparatus by 80%;, whose victim was the Romanian population of Transylvania" (ibidem, p. 68).

Robert King says also that "It was the soviet strategy to use the ethnic groups in order to achieve the control over Romania", (Idem, Ibidem, p. 132).

The same historian writes also that "the Romanians refused to enter the communist party, which had an obvious preference for the separatist minorities. (Idem, Ibidem, p. 38).

Gaspar Tamas, the son of a rabbi of Cluj, Romania, educated in the purest marxist spirit, after 1990 a deputy in the Hungarian Parliament of Budapest, having a good knowledged of the situation in Transylvania, writes: "Today one speaks about the weakness of the Romanian communist Party in 1945, but one forgot the adherence to the communist party in Transylvania by the Hungarian Popular Union, MADOSZ, which numbered 600.000 members. The Hungarian communists from Transylvania played a decisive role in the implementation of the communism in Romania." (Octavian D. Capatina, idem, ibidem, p. 20).

According to Robert King, the MADOSZ numbered 250,000 members, while according to Gaspar Tamas it numbered 600,000 members. All these militant Hungarians went first from the Horthy's fascism to the communist party of Ana Pauker and Vasile Luca (Laszlo Lukas), and later, after the Revolution of December 1989, the communist "Popular Hungarian Union in Romania" entered "The Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania " (acronym UDMR), which comprises all possible political orientations, also the chauvinist racists.

- It's this racist wing of UDMR which is using all possible means to discredit Romania.

- It's this racist wing of UDMR who are the followers of Dgcs_ Csaba, with his criminal slogan: "I will kill every Romanian crossing my way.....", (see, please, the attached documents).

- They are the chauvinist racists with their criminal activities and numerous Human Rights violations, but many of these violations are not mentioned in the Media, in order to avoid big political scandals and give the impression of the "model of ethnic relations", while the League for the Defense of Human Rights in Romania (Romanian acronym LADO), avoided also to report that violations to the International Human Rights organizations for the same reason.

We are mentioning just a very few slogans of these chauvinist racist Hungarians:

- "The Romanians who do not speak Hungarian language will not be allowed to settle in the County of Harghita". (Natiunea, 14-29 January, 2000, National nr. 787/2000).

- "The parishioner who do not vote for UDMR must not come any more to the church", Laszlo T_kes, bishop and honorary president of UDMR, (newspaper "Evenimentul Zilei", June 15, 2000).

- "It's stupid to accept Romanian representatives for the counties of Harghita and Covasna", (Marko Bella, president of UDMR).

Mr. Ambassador, do You agree with the above slogans and many others?

* * *

In April 2000, in the town of Sf. Gheorghe, Covasna, there was a numerous Romanian manifestation with another kind of slogans:

- "Stop wearing enmity between Hungarians and Romanians", or

- "Integration, not Segregation and Enclave", or

- "Let build together the future of our children", (Natiunea, April 19-25, 2000).

- "When thousand or more people are manifesting on the streets against the ethnic criteriadiscrimination made by local Hungarian administration, one could say for sure that something is wrong with the Hungarians, and UDMR must prove that they respect the rights of the Romanians in the localities with Hungarian majority. (Bogdan Chireac, "Romanians-Hungarians, a model of normal cooperation ", Newspaper " Adevarul " Apr.16, 2000).

* * *

Dear Ambassador,

We consider that as long as the chauvinist-racists wing of UDMR continues with its criminal activities and Human Rights violations, Romania cannot be considered a model of ethnic relations.

We know that the Resolution 1201 doesn't agree with territorial autonomy on ethnic criteria, but this doesn't mean that the chauvinist racist Hungarians should continue undisturbed their criminal activities.

We know that Romania's interest is to be integrated in EU and in Euro-Atlantic organizations, and we appreciate very much your efforts and your contribution to this purpose, but a real fair cooperation between the two countries and nations cannot start without first cleaning the many social and political debris which are blocking the way to a peaceful, lovely neighborhood, debris which are all the Human Rights violations they committed along the past centuries up to the present time against the Romanian Nation. Therefor they should first apologize to Romania and the Romanian nation for all that crimes and Human Rights violations and make compensation arrangements to all their victims.

No matter what Government would be in Romania after the November elections, the problem remains the same. President Emil Constantinescu's policy to covert the Human Rights violations committed by the chauvinistic racist Hungarians was wrong. Every-body in Romania knows about these violations and it is a great moral and political injustice committed against the Romanians, covered by their own President.

On the other hand, those who try to cover a crime are themselves accomplices to the crime.

Therefor we are asking for a official public denunciation of those chauvinistic racists Hungarians of Transylvania, the extremist wing of UDMR, by the whole civilized world and we are citing Vladimir Tismaneanu, a political analyst and University professor in USA, who says:

"On failure to condemn the past, as did Germany and Czech Republic, the most advanced post communist countries on their way to normality and in absence of morality in politics, one cannot build real democracy."

"The velvet revolutions produced counter velvet revolutions, the return of the communists in many countries". (Vladimir Tismaneanu, cited by Mirela Roznovan in " Lumea Libera ", New York, Nr. 571, Sept. 11, 1999).

Mr. Ambassador,

After these very short considerations regarding Romania's history during WW I and WW II, please allow us to present some events from Hungary's history during the same period of time.

"After the defeat of Germany and the collapse of Austro-Hungary, in March 1919 the Karoly's government, in a desperate political move, overhanded the state administration to Bella Khun, who set up in Hungary a bolshevist regime like that in the Soviet Union, and embarked upon an action to help the Soviet Union spread the bolshevist revolution all over Europe.

In the first months of Bella Khun's reign, at Szegedin, a city in East Hungary, wasformed a strong opposition to which belonged all political personalities of that time: Stephen Bethlen, former prime-minister, Count Andrassy, former prime minister, Prince Louis von Windischgraetz, Waszony, Admiral Horthy and others. They formed there a provisional Government of Hungary, (Traian Golea, "Transylvania and Hungarian Revisionism" - Romanian Historical Studies, Miami Beach, Florida, 1988 p. 53-54).

This provisional Government of Hungary, which in November 1919 became the official government of the "mutilated" Hungary, asked the Romanian government to order its army to "enter Hungary crossing the river Tissa, which then was the borderline between Romania and Hungary". (Idem, ibidem, p. 54).

On July 20, 1919, Bella Khun ordered the Hungarian army to attack Romania in order to reoccupy Transylvania. The Hungarians were again defeated and on August 4th, 1919 Budapest was captured by the Romanian army. After three months, having saved Hungary itself and the whole of Central Europe from the bolshevists hordes of Bella Khun, the Romanian army retreated from Budapest and turned the Hungarian state to Admiral Horthy, who ruled Hungary until 1944. (Conf. Constantin Kiritzesco, "La Roumanie dans la guerre mondiale, 1916-1919" , Paris, ed. Paayot, 1934, and N.P. Comnen, "O prima experienta comunista In Ungaria" , (A first communist experience in Hungary). ed. Destin, Madrid, 1957, apud Traian Golea, "Transylvania and Hungarian Revisionism" ed. "Romanian Hisatorical Studies", Miami Beach, FL. USA. 1998, pp. 51-54).

Ten days after the occupation of Budapest, on August 14, Prince von Windischgraetz issued a statement in his name and iun the name of his political friends - the provisional government from Szegedin - , which was published in the european newspapers of the time and we reproduce it from N.P. Comnen, " A first communist experience in Hungary" , p. 129:

"I would have gladly laid down my life to keep Transylvania in Hungary's possession; and I would have preferred to see Hungarian troops enter Budapest to chase the bolshevists away. Since that was unfortunately impossible, I declare openly that I prefer to see the Romanians in Budapest than Bella Kuhn and his ilks, who have destroyed my fatherland politically and economically. I faithfully acknowledge herewith that by occupying Budapest the Romanians have rendered a great service to Hungary and to the whole of mankind at the same time". (" Transylvania and Hungarian Revisionism" , Traian Golea, p. 54).

Details related to these historical moments are given in his Report to the Romanian Minister in Bern-Switzerland, Michail Pacleanu, by N.P. Comnen, who later became Foreign Minister of Romania.

In this report is said that the representatives of the provisional government of Szegedin contacted twice the diplomat N.P. Comnen and declared that "after the failure suffered by the Czechs and recent successes of the Romanian army, it is demonstrated that the only power capable to liquidate the bolshevism in Central Europe is Romania".

"Only with your aid, said Vaszony, we can save our country and reestablish peace and order in the middle of Europe", (N.P. Comnen, op. cit., apud Traian Golea, "SOS Transylvania" , p. 58-61, Romanian Historical Studies, Miami Beach, 1993)

This episode of Hungary's salvation from the bolshevist regime of Bella Khhn in 1919 is described in the French magazine "Revue des deux Mondes" , December, 1927, pp 619-620, as follows:

"At the cost of enormous sacrifices Romania has accomplished in the south its traditionalmission, which has always been, like that of Poland in the north, to withstand the Tartar invasion, and it has put an end to the forces of destruction that threatened to spread the bolshevist power down to the very gates of Vienna. Romania has saved herself, but has at the same time liberated Hungary from the wretched tyranny that had for a while oppressed the realm of St. Stephen. Those were, for sure the feelings of the Hungarian authorities themselves, for when the Romanian army was preparing to leave Hungary, the Hungarian prefect of Szabolcs interceded with the Romanian army headquarters to prolong their stay in Hungary and to protect the population from the red armies; a few months later, the Romanian army received a similar request, but this time it was motivated by the population's fear of the reaction of the white guards. It was called upon to play the part of a moderator among opposed parties, a part that was played in the past by the army of the Duke of AngoulKme in Restoration Spain. "It may be that the Hungarians have forgotten the services they have received at the hands of the Romanians, but it is nevertheless a good thing to remind them..." (Apud Traian Golea, " Transylvania and Hungarian Revisionism" , p. 94).

Sincerely Yours

George Duma, Ph. D. Traian Golea

ANEXE

Do you agree that Hungary should appologize to Romania for the crimes committed against the Romanians, i.e. for the about 500.000 mass expulsions, for the over 45.000 mass killing, for the destruction of 230 villages after the revolutuion of 1848, and for the destructions of Romanian Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches in Transylvania in the period 1940-1944 ?

1. Federal Germany excused to Israel for all the atrocities and the Holocaust during the Nazi era.

2. The German Democratic Republic recognized the responsability of the entire German people for the past (Feb. 9, 1990).

3. President Michael Gorbachov expressed regrets for the Japanese soldiers who died as war prisoners in USSR.

4. President Boris Yeltsin apologized (Oct. 12, 1993) to Japan for the abuses of WW II Japanese war prisoners.

5. President Waclaw Havel excused to Germany for the expulsion of Sudeten Germans (January 22, 1997).

6. Prime Minister Morihiro Hosohawa of Japan apologized (Aug. 4, 1993) for the sufferings Japan armies inflicted

to Korean womens during WWII, for forcing them to serv as prostitutes for the Japanese soldiers.

7. Five victims (in South Korea), were given $ 17,000 each and a letter of apology from Japanese Prime Minister Rytaro Hashimoto at a ceremony in Seoul, South Korea, for being forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers in WWII (January 12, 1997).

Japan's President escused also to Great Britain for the abuses and brutal treatment of about 57,000 British war prisoners committed by the Japanese armies during WW II. .

9. President Lee Teng-Hui made the first official apology (Feb. 28. 1995), for one of the worst chapter in Taiwan's history, the massacre of an estimated 18,000 people in 1947.

10. Thousand of Pole workers who were forced to work as slave laborers by the Nazis, sued Germany for more than $ 1 billion in compensation for wages and ill health (January 9, 1999).

11. Recently, in February 2000, Johannes Rau, the President of Germany, apologized to the Israely Knesset for the Holocaust, and in March 2000 His Holiness Pope John Pope II asked for forgivness for all the injustices committed by the Catholic Church at recent times, as well as centuries before.

The list is longer, but Hungary never apologized to Romania and the Romanian nation for the abuses, crimes and Human Rights violations committed centuries before aswell as for that committed during the Horthy's era.

Hungary and the Hungarians, including UDMR (arconym for "Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania), must officially apologize to Romania, for all the murders, mass killings, Human Rights abuses, etc. committed against the Romanians.

They have to apologize for:

- mass killing of the 40.000 Romanian civilians in Transylvania by the Hungarian armyafter the 1848 revolution,

The Supreme Court of Justice of Romania

Bucharest

Dear Mr. President,

Regarding the General Elections in Romania, scheduled for Nov.26, 2000, according to the information we received, the "Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania" (acronym UDMR), is not registered as a political party and therefor we are considering that it cannot participate to the elections as a political representative of the Hungarians in Romania.

In consequence, we are asking You to find out the legality of this situation and to officially inform the public about the legal status of this organization.

It is known that the chauvinistic-racist wing of UDMR are those who are always committing all the Human Rights violations and abuses in Romania - a kind of activities which are banned in any other country - and that's why UDMR should either eliminate them from its ranks, or it will be self disqualified as a political organization and eliminate from the political life of Romania.

This chauvinistic-racist wing of UDMR are the followers of the old Dgcs_ Csba's racists, an organization which in 1940, during the occupation of Northern Transylvania, had as slogan "I shall kill each Romanian crossing my way, etc.". They are who, committed the mass killings in the villages of Ip, Traznea and Sarmas , and killed over 6000 (six thousands) civilian Romanians in the first days of the occupation with the aim to create an atmosphere of terror, which helped to control the situation, an then, until 1944, they forced around 500,000 (five hundred thousand) Romanians to live the occupied territory, in a forerunner style of expulsion of today Kosovo.

They are the ones who deported 131,000 Jews from Northern Transylvania to the concentration camps of Birkenau-Auschwitz and 15,000 other Jews to Kamenetz-Podolsk in Ukraine.

They are the ones who raised to the ground 33 Romanian Orthodox and Greek- Catholic churches and continued their criminal activities over decades, till our days, (See, please, attachments " Dgcs_ Csaba 1939, 1983 and 2000 ").

They are the ones who tried to install in 1998 a memorial plaque in the town of Dej, Romania, in order to honor Daday Lorand, who under the pseudonym of Dgcs_ Csaba wrote the book "No Mercy", (Nincs kegyelem). See, please, the attached copies).

They are the ones who in 1990 forced over 4,000 (four thousand) Romanians out of the Counties of Covasna and Harghita.

They are the ones who incited the population of the City of Odorhei to make public demonstrations against the Greek- Catholic nuns of the Congregations of the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, assaulting the building, breaking the doors, brutalizing the nuns and forcing them to leave their own building.

They are the ones who falsified, in a demented attempt to prevent the opening of the Orphanage, donated by the "Swiss Humanitarian Organization Basel Hilft ", and provoking a big international scandal brought to the Human Rights Organization in Geneva.

They are the ones who provoked also innumerable Human Rights violations, as one could find out in different libraries all over the world, included Romania.

The Bishop Laszlo T_kes, Honorary President of UDMR, is the one who during the Communal Elections in June 2000, declared in his church in Oradea, Romania, that "The parishioners who do not vote for UDMR, are no more aloud to come to church". ("Evenimentul Zilei", June 15, 2000).

This declaration, made by a Bishop of a Christian church is the expression of the chauvinistic racist idea, who subordinates the practice of the christian belief of his parishioners to the political interest of the chauvinistic-racist wing of UDMR.

According to our information, the only political ethnic Hungarian organization in Romania, which is registered as a political Party, is "The Democratic Hungarian Liberal Party in Romania " and in consequence, we are considering that this political Party is the only one entitled to participate to the General Elections of November 2000.

We are asking You to make known the Romanian electorate from inland and abroad as soon as possible the legal status regarding the participation of UDMR to the November 2000 elections in Romania, this letter being sent to the entire Romanian Press all over the world.

Sincerely yours,

WE ARE AND WE WANT TO REMAIN ROMANIANS ,

this is the title of the above article

This article is mentioning a peaceful demonstration of the Romanians in the City of Sfantu Gheorghe, Covasna County, one of the smallest Counties in Romania, with a majority of Hungarian population of 232,592 inhabitants, representing 23.4%; Romanians and 75.2%; Szeklers, Hungarians and Hungarian speaking Gypsies.

The Romanians are protesting against the ethnic discrimination and against the magyarization policy of the Mayor of the City, Mr. Almos Albertis doing against the Romanians.

On the panels the Romanians are carrying, one could read:

- "Stop bearing enmity between Hungarians and Romanians", or

- "Integration, not separatism and enclave" or

- "Let's build together the future of our children".

This is the zone where the Hungarians are trying to make permanently international problems,in order to promote the idea of a federated Transylvania in Romania.

Short Translation

Laszo T_kes, Honorary President of UDMR (Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania), asked in Press conference in Austria, for an autonomous Government for the 3,5 mil. Hungarians in Romania.

The Senator Marko Bela, the acting President of UDMR, said that " Probably this information is erroneous, or even false, because according to their estimate, the number of Hungarians in Romania should be approx. 2,000.000, while the last official Census gives approx. 1,6 mil. ethnic Hungarians.

operation, in order to increase the percentage of ethnic Hungarians. [See pleas.
