The Anti-Communist Resistance in Romania.

The Legionary Danger to Communists.

(Excerpt from the article about the Noica-Pillat Trial,

by Ion Boieru, published in "Cuvantul Romanesc".

Hamilton, Canada, March 1998.

During Communism in Romania, the key word was the concept of "resistance". Nowhere behind the Iron Curtain was there a struggle of such great amplitude as the one in the Romania.

The most powerful and articulated anti-communist "resistance" in the Satellite countries was in Romania, including the rise of the peasant class, intellectuality and youth, whom get thrown in jail in great numbers, greater than in any other communist country. Also the strongest political exile, with great contributions and major work reached the highest level amongst national exiles. Factory workers - the laborer class - was not spared either, from harsh jail sentences.

After the Hungarian revolution, the Romanian Communist Party panicked and tension rose between the Central Committee and the "Securitate" (the Romanian KGB). Up to that moment, the Central Committee had the upper hand over the "Securitate", after many internal conflicts. When faced with the disastrous situation in Hungary, the "Securitate" complained that because of its feeble position, a similar upheaval in Romania could not be stopped.

The Central Committee did not back up from its position and continued to keep the power. Meanwhile, the Bolshevik Central from Moscow called a meeting with a delegation. Vasile Luca went as the chief of the delegation and he was accompanied by Grigore Preoteasa, who died in a plane crash.

After returning from Moscow with the analyses of causes that lead to the Revolution in Hungary, and with a complete set of instructions on "how to prevent" similar events elsewhere, the Central Committee begun implementing the orders from Moscow. One of the first order that was to be implemented was to ease the tension with the "Securitate", situation which allowed the "Securitate" to be more vigilant and empowered to take the necessary precautions against an eventual revolution. The Hungarian Resolution greatly worried its communist neighbors.

The first session of the Central Committee was dedicated to discussing defense. Among the participating speakers, the lawyer Blatt or Blum was the official associate on juridical matters, a position greatly colored by his heavy political penchant.

"May God prevent anybody from believing that my proposal has at its root any hatred against the legionarism, but they are the first ones under scrutiny, because they are the most dangerous adversaries of the regime. Even though, more than 15.000 of them were sentenced and got jailed.

From what I know first handedly, from ex-political prisoners, the legionary danger to us is greater than ever. By their resilience they morally dominated the situation.

May I add that my own people, the Jews, among whom some younger rabbis, were admiring the legionaries. They even gave me exact data of instances when they were respected and helped in all situations by the legionaries. And then legionaries were fearless when faced with the communists. Some of the legionaries , upon being set free from jail, display the same behavior of fearlessness, contempt and hope that the regime will topple. The ex-officers of the old regime and the ex-war prisoners joined the legionaries in the anti-establishment fight. The warprisoners that returned from Soviet Russia adhered to the Legionary Movement. They kept nationalism alive while prisoners and they were all organized in "needs" with stress on education in the legionary spirit and mutual help.

The legionaries prevailed through their moral, national and Christian resilience, openly anti-Soviet and anti-communist.

As you all know, than the ex-war prisoners were set free by Soviet Russia and returned to Romanian soil. We could say that the Legionary Movement considerably increased its members. Someone could say, this group doesn't represent a real danger for our Republic still politically unstable and any moment we can expect revolutionary attempts like in Hungary ?

Today, like yesterday, the Legionary Movement is the Romanian voice we should fear, for it was not destroyed, not even diminished.

Another aspect is the peasant class, a multi-secular resistance by its very psychological structure in the face of any progress. The peasantry is the most traditionalist social class, therefor refractory to any radical change as the one envisioned by our marxist conception.

Besides this, there are a multitude of armed groups of partisans which did not surrender and were not destroyed. They are spread throughout the country and may it not be forgotten that the peasantry was instrumental in electing the Legionaries during the 1937 campaign, according to almost mythological traditionalism and Christianity.

If we add the rather powerful groups of laborers that do not follow the marxist doctrine, we see reality and we cannot delude ourselves that all is fine.

During this historical moment, we are faced with a difficult task, should we want to build a socialist society"
