| It is the Year of Our Lord 1574. The legendary Marguerite de Valois -- a woman of tremendous intellect and astonishing beauty, with a voracious appetite for intrigue (both political and romantic) -- has given up on life at the age of twenty-one. Locked away in her apartments at the Louvre, grief-stricken over the execution of her lover on trumped-up charges of conspiracy against the crown, Margot has no thought for anything but her sorrow. Then an unexpected message arrives, concealed in a bottle of smelling salts. It is an invitation from her husband, King Henri of Navarre, offering to receive her at his Court in Pau. Margot's brother Henri III is on the French throne, but it is her mother, Catherine de Mdicis, who rules France with an iron will and the stomach for any action necessary to maintain her power. Chief among Catherine's political and personal desires is the destruction of Henri of Navarre, the man who prophesies say will unseat her progeny on the throne of France. Unfortunately for Catherine, Henri has proved difficult to kill. He has escaped the city of Paris, returning to his kingdom and to the head of the Protestant Party. When Margot petitions to join him there, Catherine sees an opportunity. Perhaps Margot can be turned against her husband. After all, Margot's two-year-old marriage was born of politics not passion -- a failed attempt to bring peace between warring Catholics and Protestants. Margot herself sets off for the south seeking nothing more than a quiet life of seclusion. Once Margot reaches Pau, however, she discovers that neither her heart nor her interest in political intrigue is as dead as she believed. While the novel Margot and the Three Henries stands entirely on its own, it can also be read as a sequel to Alexandre Dumas' La Reine Margot. |
