A LIL' 'BOUT MA AND DAD:

Blunt was born to Thomas and Helen Stone in July of 1972 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His father was retired from the military, having done a stint in Vietnam. His mother was one of the hardest working women I have come to know. Both of his parents came from towns in Virginia that were not even 15 miles from one another. His father grew up in Joppa and his mother grew up in Danville.

Thomas Stone served this "great country" of ours in the Vietnam War, and was hounerably discharged from our nations military soon after returning home due to a severe car accident that put him in a coma for three months, and left him with a metal plate in his right leg. My mother didn't know it at the time, but that accident also left my father with a condition that would slowly depleat his ability to think and act rationally. His decline became obvious when he began to drink heavily, and spend a lot of his money on his habbit and his, so called, friends. He would drink, sometimes, until he was so drunk that he would pass out while sitting outside. Many times he was either dragged upstairs, or left in the place where he lay until he was sober enough to move on his own. Needless to say, he wasn't much of a father or husband during that time. He was never violent when he drank, but he was very balligerent - picking arguments with the people around him. Most times that was my mother.

What I'm about to tell you is my favorite part of this story, because this is where Blunt drew the strength to persue his career dispite the many obstacles and trials in his way.

As it was mentioned earlier, Helen Stone is one of the smartest and hardest working people I had come to know. When Blunt's father showed no signs of letting go of his drinking and cursing and passing out, his mother, Helen Stone, packed up both of her children and left his father to his devices. Blunt was only five years old. She had been working as a cook in a Jewish assisted living community. Back then they were simply referred to as "old folk's homes." She made a measly $127.00 per week - a small sum of money, even for the 70's. Though she didn't earn much in the way of cash, she did all she could to provide for her two growing boys, showing them a life much different from the one that her money could provide. She worked that job dilligently, though she wanted more for her and her children. She purposed in her heart to make something more of herself than what she had become.

A few years passed by, and she was still working as a cook in that old folk's home. Still determined to make a better life for her children than the one she had, she began to look at college as a way for her to earn more money. Money was tight, so she had to take classes as she could afford, both the time, and the money to devote to this endeavor. Dispite much opposition from her family, she took class after class until she had earned herself a degree in nursing. That degree did not come easy at all for her. She had two little boys, bills that must be paid, books she had to obtain, and classes that had to be paid for. On top of that, she had to devote time to study very hard in the type of math that deals with weights and measurements with medicine. It was not her strong suit. But, she managed to get through those classes with passing grades, and she did it all with the help of people she barely knew, and the kind of drive that went into building the first flying machines.

FROM A MAN TO A BOY:

All of that happened without some much as a blink of an eye. Blunt had settled into his own way. He wanted the big gold chains and pricy clothes he saw his favorite artists with at the time. Back then, Eric B & Rakim had just come out with there first video, "I Ain't No Joke." This was the first time Blunt had seen so much gold around one man's neck, and there is where his attention stayed from day to day. He also saw the nice cars and beautiful women that seemed to come with the territory. So all the things that his mother had gone through had not phazed him. He thought of how easy it would be to make a fresh rap song, and get the cash, gold, and girls he had seen on TV. Much to his disappointment, becoming a famous rapper proved to be a lot harder than he thought. He quickly found out that, in order to become a famous rapper, one had to have talent - something Blunt had not discovered within himself yet. He was around 13 years old at that time.

He would not discover his talent for another two years. At age 15, while attending Central High School, Blunt experienced some of his most confusing times. Up until then, his grades were among the best in his classes, but they began to slip into dismal, dissapointing reminders of a young man undergoing a change for the worse. He began to change from a young man into a young hoodlum - clowning around in class and giving his teachers a hard time. Many times his sharp tongue and non-compliant attitude led him to be suspended, in some cases, from 10 to 20 days. He wouldn't do any classwork or homework, but he would make some of the highest grades in his class at test time. This behaviour from such a "bright kid" baffled his teachers, and frustrated all the others that knew of his behaviour, and his abilities.

It became obvious to the staff at Central High that Blunt needed something more than just school work in his high school career. It was found out that he spent a lot of his free time in one of two places. At lunch he would go to the side of the gym wall where other students and himself would smoke cigaretts and, sometimes, weed before returning to class, but there was another place that Blunt more of his free time - the music room. Though Blunt didn't even have music in his curriculum that year, he would spend a lot of his time in that room listening to Mr. Jackson teach choirs and rehears the school band. He would even stay after school just to spend more time with the students in music class. There was one student, in particular, that caught his attention more than any of the others. And that young man went by the name, Kenny Rieder. Kenny "88 Fingers" Rieder played the piano, and/or the keyboards for the band, and he could play with such finesse and precision. Blunt stuck to that young man like his own shadow. He wanted to learn to play like that, though he never asked the young man to teach him anything. That is until, one day, Blunt had pushed his Spanish teacher too far. He was sent to the office, which had become routine at this point. This time, however, something happened that would change Blunt's life for ever.

When Blunt arrived at the adminstrator's office he signed in, as usual, and took a seat. This day one of the adminnstrators would ask to speak with him. She had to know why such a promising young man would take such a turn. It was with that thought in mind that she would ask the question that gave Blunt the opportunity to express his love for the one thing he wanted to do in all the world - learn to play the piano. Mrs. Evans asked him, "If you had the chance to do anything you wanted to at this school, what would that be?" She would learn of the passion Blunt held for the ability to play, among some startling news. Blunt only gave his teachers a hard time, and got in so much trouble because he was bored with the curriculum at Central. He didn't find it challenging enough, so he stopped doing the work. He felt it was pointless. Mrs. Evans, having compassion for Blunt and his aspirations, made a deal with him. If he completed his work before the end of class time, and he had turned in his homework, the teachers could give him a pass to go to music class. It was there that he learned to play one of his favorite songs at that time - "Tender Love" by Force MD's.

At this point many would say, "and the rest is history.", but Blunt's story doesn't end there. He had broken the deal almost as quickly as it was made. He still didn't do any classwork or homework. Instead of taking the deal that was offered, he chose to keep things as they were - hanging out with hsi friend Kenny after school so he could learn how to play other songs that he liked. The only problem with that was Blunt was still not experiencing the lifestyle he wanted. With people teasing his clothes, and time running out in the school year, Blunt turned to selling drugs. More and more, Blunt cut school to go make money in the street. He would lie to his mother and take the school bus to school, but when he got there, he would turn around and walk right back down the hill to a waiting car or to the subway and head straight to the spot where he sold crack cocain and weed every day. Just before making that decision, Blunt had met a young lady in his Spanish class that he despirately wanted to impress. The only set back was that he felt he had nothing to impress her with. Thus, his choice to sell drugs.

Blunt talked his mother into signing a work permit that allowed him to get a job to cover up the fact that he was making some serious cash in the streets. Day after day went by with more and more cash, and more and more product to be moved. Knowing he had to keep his success in the drug game a secret from, both, his family, and the other dealers, Blunt would sneak around during the times when most of the dealers were, either sleep, or in the clubs. Since his mother worked from 3pm until 11pm, Blunt had enough time to make his trip, make some cash, and get back home before anyone knew what was going on. ...To be continued
