DATES FOR SUBSEQUENT MEETINGS (OSH WORKGROUP)
:

Tuesday, 08/08/00 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Thursday, 08/24/00 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Introduction:

Scott Richardson of OSHA opened the meeting and welcomed the members and alternates.

Information Sharing:

OSHA Sponsorship: Scott announced that OSHA had formally agreed to co-sponsor the Hispanic Symposium at the National Safety Councils Congress.

Agenda for the Hispanic Forum:

Leo Carey informed the group that the formal name for the October Hispanic meeting at the National Safety Councils Congress and Expo was now "The Hispanic Forum." The Forum will be held over two days (all day Tuesday, October 17, and half a day on Wednesday, October 18). After the Forum, there will be an EPA Stakeholders Meeting ( Thursday after the Forum meeting and on Friday, October 20).

Planned Speakers/Recommendations:

Leo informed the group that Forum sponsors hope to have 1- 3 Keynote Speakers and also a panel discussion in the morning. In the afternoon, there will be breakouts by functional area (International, Occupational, and Environmental).

Leo asked that members give him additional names for possible speakers. Mike Nash suggested Dr. Carlos Pedro Sampos-Burgoa Zarnichi of Mexico.

Invitation List Needed:

A list of Hispanic community leaders and others with a vested interest in the subject of Hispanic safety and health is needed so that these individuals can be invited to the Forum. Leo mentioned that the sponsors of the Forum have agreed to provide limited funding for scholarships for community leaders who cannot afford to attend.

Logistical Summary (Registration, Rooms, Etc.):

Leo stated that registration to the Forum is by invitation only. Attendees of the Forum need to use NSC Congress registration forms with "HF" printed on them (for "Hispanic Forum") to ensure proper registration for the Forum.

Time line for Completing Papers, Etc.:

Scott reminded the group that the first drafts of our OSH papers will be reviewed at the August 8th meeting and final versions will be reviewed at the August 24th meeting. The papers should be approximately 3 pages in length. The papers should not be too technical, but of course should be technically sound. Each paper must include a statement of the problem, a summary of the issues/research, and a list of recommended actions to recommend for addressing the problem.

Review of 06/21/00 Minutes:

The minutes were approved as submitted.

Topic Review:

Each topic group gave status reports on their projects (introduction, construction, training, women, and pesticides). Each project is underway though no complete drafts have been made available as yet. All topic groups agreed to complete drafts by August 1st and send to Scott for distribution prior to the 8/8 meeting. Everyone agreed to provide these drafts in both Word and WordPerfect if possible.

Announcements:

The next meeting will be held at US DOL on Tuesday, August 8, 2000.

The meeting was adjourned.
