YVC 2002 celebrates volunteers during closing ceremonies

(CSC News - August 26, 2002) - Youth volunteers were honoured during closing ceremonies for the CSC St. John’s Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) Summer Program on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at the Community Services Council in Virginia Park Plaza. The St. John's Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) is a part of a national program that actively involves young people aged 11-18 in volunteer service opportunities.

Emcee for the evening was Hisham Athas, who moved to Newfoundland from Sri Lanka about a year ago and first learned of YVC through the Association for New Canadians. “Since joining YVC I have had so many great experiences and have met so many people," says Hisham, "I have learned more about my community and have had so much fun doing it!"

YVC volunteers were involved in a number of activities throughout the summer assisting seniors, raising funds for other agencies, planning events and more. One of the guest speakers for the evening was Eva Marsh, with the United Church Food Aid Center, who talked about the amazing work done by the YVC volunteers in the community garden that was established near St. James United Church on Elizabeth Avenue.

Jodi Bartlett, Volunteer Coordinator for the Association for New Canadians, who has been a huge supporter of YVC for several years, also spoke about the positive and motivating environment for young people within the YVC Program. “The program has given volunteers the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, to grow as mature individuals, to explore their interests and to make a difference in the community. “

YVC Team Leaders, Erin Mayo and Shannon Mahon, as well as Kimberley Greening, Program Coordinator, presented awards to all the volunteers for their outstanding contribution to the program and to the community. This summer in less than 7 weeks, over 40 volunteers involved with YVC accumulated more than 1135 hours and assisted over 40 non-profit organizations. Through their volunteer work these young people have truly given something back to the community. Together they have made a difference!
