"Little children, keep yourselves from idols." 1John 5:21

Anything that stands between Christ and the believer is an idol. John
says that we are to keep ourselves from the things of the world which
occupy our mind and our attention.

Covetousness is idolatry; other things are idolatry. Many people are
worshipping many things in this wicked world today. These things are
nothing in the world but idols. God's first statement to us is: "In the
beginning God created. . ." (Genesis 1:1). Among His last words to us
are these: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

However fervent our love for others and our adherence to God's commands,
such human efforts will come to nothing apart from true understanding of
God as revealed in Christ.
