If Red rolls 6-1, 5-1 or 3-1 next turn, he is surely glad that he maintained his 8-point because Red can clear the 9-point using the 8-point as a landing place.
The downside of maintaining the 8-point this turn is that an immediate 4-3 forces Red to break the 6-point, and Red is likely be forced to break the 8-point anyway with most 2's and 4's.
In addition, Red will have difficulty clearing the 8-point even after he has successfully cleared his 9-point, since aces and 3's (in particular) play awkward.
Keeping the 8-point this turn only helps to clear the 9-point if Red rolls 6-1, 5-1 or 3-1 next turn, while it can become a liability in many other variations, so Red will be better off by clearing the point this turn.
Also, the play leaves spares on the 6 and the 9-point which give Red future flexibilities.
