The value of making the bar-point looks obvious. White has two checkers on Red's ace-point, so making the bar-point goes a long way towards hemming them in. But after making the bar-point, Red's position is stripped and difficult to improve next turn.
On the other hand, splitting the back men gives pressure on White's stripped 8-point. 10/9 leaves Red no blots to worry about.
