Against a 5-3 opening, I usually split and build with 2-1, 4-1 and 5-1.  Splitting the back checkers gives extra pressure on opponent's stripped 8-point.
13/11 6/5 is my close second choice.  A 2-1 roll gives me enough disadvantage in the race that I'd take the opportunity to slot.
13/11 6/5 has to be right at DMP and GG particularly against weaker opponents.
