John Chapter 13 (Continued)

John 13:22-25 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. There was reclining on Yeshua’s (Jesus') breast one of His disciples, whom Yeshua (Jesus) loved. Simon Peter therefore gestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking." He, leaning back against Jesus' breast, said to Him, "L-rd, who is it?"

This is a reference to John, the author of this book. It is symbolic of Yeshua’s disciples resting in Him. Trusting in Him to meet their every need.

John 13:26 Yeshua (Jesus) therefore answered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the matzah and give it to him." So when He had dipped the matzah, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

His name was not Judas Iscariot. He was Y’hudah Ben-Shim’on from K’riot. Judah son of Simon from the town of K’riot.

The custom of the day was for the host to give a choice piece to the guest of honor. Judas may have been sitting near Yeshua as well, perhaps in a place of honor, because it appears that it was easy for Yeshua to hand him the piece of food.

John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him…

The Bible only records 2 humans being possessed by Satan himself. Judas and the Anti-Messiah (Anti-Christ). Other possessions are by ordinary demons. This was such a big job Satan did not pass the job off to demon but did it himself.

John 13:27-30 Then Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, "What you do, do quickly." But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Yeshua (Jesus) had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The powers of darkness seem to enjoy the night.

John 13:31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus (Yeshua) said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and G-d is glorified in Him.

Yeshua looked past the suffering and thought about the resurrection and conquering death.

John 13:32 If G-d is glorified in Him, G-d will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.

John 13:33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you.

Yeshua affectionately refers to them as little children.

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

This command is not new but a new standard.

  1. Through unconditional love or sacrificial love.
  2. New covenant power

John 13:36 Simon Peter asked him, "L-rd, where are you going?" Yeshua (Jesus) replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."

As already stated He was to be the firstfruit from the dead and he went on before us. We follow after Him. Peter could not go to the execution stake to atone for our sins. He was a sinner and needed Yeshua atoning death to take away his sins.

John 13:37-38 Peter said to him, L-rd, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you sake. Yeshua (Jesus) answered him; will you lay down you life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied me three times.

Again Yeshua knows what Peter will do before He does.
