B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 9 (Continued)

B'resheet 9:23 But Shem and Yefet (Japheth). took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness.

I found this appropriate.

Shem and Japheth took a garment. The Hebrew verb "took" being in the singular, intimates that the impulse to this act of respect to their common father originated with Shem, whose pious mind recognized in Noach not only a parent, but a king and a priest, while Japheth merely acted upon his suggestion. The ninth letter that corresponds to this chapter is Tet -serpent; objective good- that which appears evil but is for our improvement.

B'resheet 9:24-25 When Noach awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. So he said, "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers."

What had Ham done? IF it was just a lack of respect, how would Noah had known of it if he was asleep? Was it something else? The Word does not say. It does say the line will be cursed for it. They also would not be used for the line of the coming Messiah. The line chosen would be through the line of Shem that would lead to the Jewish People.

His youngest son - It is better-translated "his youngest one" This is referring to something that Canaan, Noach's grandson had done, not Ham. That is why he is cursed. Yefet (Japheth) was Noach's youngest son not Ham.

B'resheet 5:32 And Noach was five hundred years old, and Noach became the father of Shem, Ham, and Yefet (Japheth). (NAS)

Canaan is the third to be cursed in the Bible. First the serpent was cursed and then Kayin (Cain).

Canaan- derived from the Hebrew verb-"To humble oneself"

The Canaanites continued to be driven out by the Israelites and their downfall followed. (Josh 9:23)

Some believe that the sin here was "homosexuality". The expression "the nakedness of their father" is connected with sexual immorality. See Leviticus chapter 18 and 20. Also Canaan's descendants were known for their sexual perversion. Sodom and Gomorrah were cites inhabited by Canaan's descendants.

B'resheet 10:19-20 And the territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. (NAS)

B'resheet 9:26-27 He also said, "Blessed be the L-RD, The G-d of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. "May G-d enlarge Yefet (Japheth), and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant."

The children of Israel were the descendants of Shem. The descendants of Canaan inhabited the land that was promised to Israel. When Israel conquered the Canaanites and the other people in the land they were fulfilling this passage. Conquered people are the servants of the conquers.

Dwell in the tents of Shem - this means that they would enjoy the spiritual blessings of the G-d of Shem. It is through Shem descendants that the G-d would send the Messiah.

B'resheet 9:28-29 And Noach lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. So all the days of Noach were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died. (NAS)

So Noach lived another 350 years but it does not record that G-d used him again.
