B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 37 (Continued)

B'resheet 37:12-14 Then his brothers went to pasture their father's flock in Shechem. And Israel said to Yosef, "Are not your brothers pasturing the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." And he said to him, "I will go." Then he said to him, "Go now and see about the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock; and bring word back to me." So he sent him from the valley of Hevron, and he came to Shechem.

Here we Yosef sent by the Father for the welfare of his brothers. Again: a type pointing to our Messiah who also would be sent by the Father above for the welfare of our brothers in Messiah. We are eternally saved if only we believe.

B'resheet 37:15-17 And a man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, "What are you looking for?" And he said, "I am looking for my brothers; please tell me where they are pasturing the flock." Then the man said, "They have moved from here; for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dotan.'" So Yosef went after his brothers and found them at Dotan.

B'resheet 37:18-19 When they saw him from a distance and before he came close to them, they plotted against him to put him to death. And they said to one another, "Here comes this dreamer!

They mocked him! Here comes the dreamer! Of course they were talking about his dream where he said he would rule over them. Instead of believing it might be true, they hated him out of jealousy.

B'resheet 37:20-24 "Now then, come and let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; and we will say, 'A wild beast devoured him.' Then let us see what will become of his dreams!" But Reuben heard this and rescued him out of their hands and said, "Let us not take his life." Reuben further said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay hands on him"-- that he might rescue him out of their hands, to restore him to his father. So it came about, when Yosef reached his brothers, that they stripped Yosef of his tunic, the varicolored tunic that was on him; and they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty, without any water in it.

As I mentioned before the type does not have to fit every detail of the future event. It does not matter that Yosef was not literally killed. We must also remember the only reason Yeshua Ben Yosef was killed was because he laid down his life willingly.

John 10:17-18 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one had taken it from Me, but I lay it down on my own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father. "

Yeshua took up his life again and One day Yeshua Ben Yosef will return as Yeshua Ben David.

In the past, we do see Yosef mocked and stripped of his tunic like Yeshua. Yeshua was mocked also as ruler over Israel and was stripped of His clothing. The pit is also symbolic of the tomb Yeshua was placed in.

Matt 27:29-31 And after weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they kneeled down before Him and MOCKED Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. And after they had mocked Him, they took His robe off and put His garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. NAS

Back to B'resheet and Yosef:

B'resheet 37:25-27 Then they sat down to eat a meal. And as they raised their eyes and looked, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing aromatic gum and balm and myrrh, on their way to bring them down to Egypt. And Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood? "Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers listened to him.

Here we see them having a meal before He is betrayed for silver. Surely this sounds familiar?! This meal is symbolic of a future meal. Before Judas betrayed Yeshua for 30 pieces of silver they shared the Pesach (Passover) meal..

John 13:26-27 So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. And after the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Yeshua therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly." NAS

B'resheet 37:28 Then some Midianite traders passed by, so they pulled him up and lifted Yosef out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. Thus they brought Yosef into Egypt.

Twenty shekels of silver - The price of a slave.

B'resheet 37:29-33 Now Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Yosef was not in the pit; so he tore his garments. And he returned to his brothers and said, "The boy is not there; as for me, where am I to go?" So they took Yosef's tunic, and slaughtered a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood; and they sent the varicolored tunic and brought it to their father and said, "We found this; please examine it to see whether it is your son's tunic or not." Then he examined it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him; Yosef has surely been torn to pieces!"

This is symbolic and points to the future of the robe of the future Messiah.

Rev 19:13-16 And He is clothed with a ROBE DIPPED IN BLOOD; and His name is called The Word of G-d. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may smite the nations; and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of G-d, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND L-RD OF L-RDS."

B'resheet 37:34-36 So Yakkov tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days. Then all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. And he said, "Surely I will go down to Sheol in mourning for my son." So his father wept for him. Meanwhile, the Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh's officer, the captain of the bodyguard.

In contrast, because of the death of the G-d's Son many would be released from Sheol spiritually. Many spirits rose at the time of Yeshua's death. Yeshua was sold and ended up in the hands of Pontius Pilate.

Matt 27:50-53 And Yeshua cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook; and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were RAISED; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

We know this not to be the end of Yeshua for He is given authority and support from the Father to raise again...it was the same with Yosef. Let us continue- L-RD willing- to see what happens to change the life of Yosef for the better.

Egypt is a type of sin and death. Yosef's going into Egypt symbolizes Yeshua dying and going into the Sheol for three days.
