B'resheet 32:13-15 So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esav: two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
Although he prayed and asked G-d to change Esav's heart, He does not completely trust G-d to do it and devises a plan of his own to change Esav's heart. Ya'akov selects a sizeable gift in attempt to appease his brother.
B'resheet 32:16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between droves."
Picture this scene: He sends out one group of animals after another. He has them put space between each group. There are five groups in all. Five is the number of Grace. Ya'akov is hoping to find grace, unmerited favor, in the eyes of his brother.
B'resheet 32:17-21 And he commanded the one in front, saying, "When my brother Esav meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?' then you shall say,' These belong to your servant Ya'akov; it is a present sent to my lord Esav. And behold, he also is behind us.' " Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, "After this manner you shall speak to Esav when you find him; and you shall say,' Look, your servant Ya'akov also is behind us.' "For he said," I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me. " So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.
Here we see Ya'akov giving away his possessions in order for shalom (peace). He is then given the name of Israel. This kind of thing still goes on today with Israel.
B'resheet 32:22-23 Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Yabok (Jabbok). And he took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
Now he separates his wives, children, and the rest of his possessions and sends them on ahead.
B'resheet 32:24-28 Then Ya'akov was left alone, and a Man wrestled with him until daybreak. And when He saw that He had not prevailed against him, He touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Ya'akov's thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with Him. Then He said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me." So He said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Ya'akov." And He said, "Your name shall no longer be Ya'akov, but Israel; for you have striven with G-d and with men and have prevailed."
Remember the meaning of the letter corresponding to the chapter "the right hand of G-d".
A Man - This is G-d in the form of a man. This is another theophany of Yeshua HaMashiach. Most of Israel to this day still wrestles with Him.
B'resheet 32:29 Then Ya'akov asked Him and said, "Please tell me Your name." But He said, "Why is it that you ask My name?" And He blessed him there.
This same visitor came to see Samson's parents and they asked him the same question. Here is His answer to them.
Judges 13:17-18 And Manoah said to the angel of the L-RD, "What is your name, so that when your words come to pass, we may honor you?" But the angel of the L-RD said to him, "Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?"
Where have we heard Him referred to as Wonderful before?
Isaiah 9:6-7 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty G-d, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the L-RD of hosts will accomplish this.
B'resheet 32:30-32 So Ya'akov named the place P'ni-El (face of G-d), for he said, "I have seen G-d face to face, yet my life has been preserved." Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over P'ni-El, and he was limping on his thigh. Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Ya'akov's thigh in the sinew of the hip.
Ya'akov was still the type and was wounded in the thigh. Yeshua too would be wounded in the side by a spear by a soldier in the future. Notice it states the Ya'akov would strive with G-d and men and would prevail. Israel means "struggle with G-d" and even though for the most part today has rejected Yeshua will prevail as a nation against man. The nations of the world will rise against Israel in some form of coalition. Israel will however be protected by HaShem. When Yeshua returns they will see Him face to face and they will mourn and humble themselves before Him and in the end will be finally saved. (Physically and spiritually)
Here is what the prophet Hosea had to say about Ya'akov's encounter with the Angel of the L-rd.
Hosea 12:4-5 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed; He wept and sought His favor. He found Him at Bethel, And there He spoke with us, Even the L-RD, the G-d of hosts; The L-RD is His name.
