B'resheet 29:13 So it came about, when Lavan heard the news of Ya'akov his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Then he related to Lavan all these things.
He related to Lavan all these things - So Ya'akov told them everything that had been going on with his family. I imagine that this included why he left home about how he had deceived his father.
Yeshua went to the throne in heaven to present himself to the Father shortly after His resurrection.
B'resheet 29:14-15 And Lavan said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh." And he stayed with him a month. Then Lavan said to Ya'akov, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?"
A month - It was the custom of the day to take in a stranger for 3 days and give them lodging. So after a month Lavan expects something in return for his hospitality.
B'resheet 29:16-20 Now Lavan had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. And Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful of form and face. Now Ya'akov loved Rachel, so he said, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel." And Lavan said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man; stay with me." So Ya'akov served seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.
Leah's was the older daughter and her eyes were weak or as we could also say she was somewhat had trouble seeing. Israel "as a nation" had trouble seeing and had become blind.
Romans 11:25-27 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Ya'akov." "And this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins."
B'resheet 29:21-24 Then Ya'akov said to Lavan, "Give me my wife, for my time is completed, that I may go in to her." And Lavan gathered all the men of the place, and made a feast. Now it came about in the evening that he took his daughter Leah, and brought her to him; and Ya'akov went in to her. Lavan also gave his maid Zilpah meaning "drop" to his daughter Leah as a maid.
Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, G-d is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.
Ya'akov the deceiver becomes the deceived.
B'resheet 29:25-27 So it came about in the morning that, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Lavan, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you deceived me?" But Lavan said, "It is not the practice in our place, to marry off the younger before the first-born. Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you shall serve with me for another seven years."
Seven years fits the meaning of the chapter nicely. Zayin is the seventh letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
B'resheet 29:28-30 And Ya'akov did so and completed her week, and he gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. Lavan also gave his maid Bilhah meaning "timidity" to his daughter Rachel as her maid. So Ya'akov went in to Rachel also, and indeed he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with Lavan for another seven years.
Her week - This is the one week for wedding festivities. Ya'akov did not have to wait an additional 7 years to marry Rachel. It was just one more week. Then he had to work 7 more years.
B'resheet 29:31 Now the L-RD saw that Leah was unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
Rachel means "ewe" and like the Gentiles did not bare children for HaShem until much later in history.
B'resheet 29:32-33 And Leah conceived and bore a son and named him Re'uven-meaning "behold a son", for she said, "Because the L-RD has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me." Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, "Because the L-RD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also." So she named him Shim'on meaning" hearing, answer".
The names of the children tell the story of the struggle between these two sisters for their husband's love and attention.
Re'uven - Meaning, "See, a son"
Because the L-RD has seen my affliction, surely now my husband will love me - better translated "It is because Adonai has seen how humiliated I have been, but now my husband will love me.
Shim'on - Meaning, "Hearing"
G-d had heard that she was unloved.
Elaine here - I can't imagine sharing my husband with anyone. How awful to it must have been to not only share her husband but to share him with her sister. Knowing that he never wanted you in the first place but wanted your sister. As we read through the story here we see that Leah is a very godly woman. There are some that think that the Bible endorses having more than one wife. But each time we see a case when there is more than one wife there is nothing but heartache, stress, and turmoil.
B'resheet 29:34-35 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore he was named Levi-meaning junction; union and she conceived again and bore a son and said, "This time I will praise the L-RD." Therefore she named him Y'hudah meaning, "praised". Then she stopped bearing.
Levi - Meaning, "joining"
Y'hudah - meaning, 'Praise" - Leah praises G-d for her children.
