Sh'mot (Exodus) Chapter 21 (Continued)

Sh'mot 21:14 However, if a man deliberately attacks another, intending to kill him, drag him even from my altar, and kill him.

Drag him even from my altar - The horns of the altar was where the sacrifice was tied and the blood of the sacrifice was applied to the corners. It symbolizes the grace of G-d and Mercy to the sinner. But one who was a premeditated murderer may be forgiven by HaShem but still had to suffer the consequences for his actions.

Here is an example where this was carried out.

M'lakhim Alef (1 Kings) 1:50-53 And Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, and he arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. Now it was told Solomon, saying, "look, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, for look, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.'" And Solomon said, "If he will be a worthy man, not one of his hairs will fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in him, he will die." So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and prostrated himself before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, "Go to your house."

This gives us a picture of Yeshua when He was in the garden of Gethsemane. We must also understand that Yeshua had a human nature and struggled like we do. In contrast to Adonijah, Yeshua's major struggle was not with sin but the weight of all of our sins placed on Him. He took this weight upon Himself. It is very appropriate that Yeshua was in an Olive grove when he was praying. The emotional and psychological strain on Yeshua's human nature as He faced the crucifixion was enormous. It was so strenuous that He began to sweat drops of blood. It was like the pressure that an olive goes through when it is crushed in an olive press and out comes the oil. Yeshua asked the Father if this cup could be taken away from Him. We know He was denied and that He would have to suffer the consequences for our actions. HaShem loves us but He is also righteous and He hates sin. This sin that separates us from the Father had to be punished in some way.

Luke 22:39-46 And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. And when He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. And when He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."

If we are Messiah-like we too may have to suffer for others in this manner. Shaul asked, "Have you suffered to the point of blood shed?"

Mattityahu (Matthew) 26:36-46 Then Yeshua came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me." And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You wilt." And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? "Keep watching and praying, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, your will be done." And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. Then He came to the disciples, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Look, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. "Arise, let us be going; Look, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"

In the hand of sinners - all of us are sinners. He was the only one worthy enough to die in our place.

Romans 5:8-11But G-d demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Messiah died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of G-d through Him. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to G-d through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in G-d through our L-rd Yeshua HaMashiach, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Sh'mot 21:15 "Anyone who strikes his father or mother shall surely be put to death.

Sh'mot 21:16 "A kidnapper must be killed, whether he is caught in possession of his victim or has already sold him as a slave.

Sh'mot 21:17 "Anyone who reviles or curses his mother or father shall surely be put to death.

Boy, if this law were enforced today, it would really thin out the population wouldn't it?

Sh'mot 21:18-19 "If two men are fighting, and one hits the other with a stone or with his fist and injures him so that he must be confined to bed, but doesn't die, if later he is able to walk again, even with a limp, the man who hit him will be innocent except that he must pay for the loss of his time until he is thoroughly healed, and pay any medical expenses.

Sh'mot 21:20-21 "If a man beats his slave to death-whether the slave is male or female-that man shall surely be punished. However, if the slave does not die for a couple of days, then the man shall not be punished-for the slave is his property.

Slaves could be punished but within limits.

Sh'mot 21:22-25 "If two men are fighting, and in the process hurt a pregnant woman so that she has a miscarriage, but she lives, then the man who injured her shall be fined whatever amount the woman's husband shall demand, and as the judges approve. But if any harm comes to the woman and she dies, he shall be executed. "If her eye is injured, injure his; if her tooth is knocked out, knock out his; and so on-hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, lash for lash.

This law protects the woman and the unborn child who are innocent victims. Here we see that even the unborn child was considered human and had rights.

An Eye for an Eye - This teaches that the punishment should fit the crime.

Sh'mot 21:26-27 "If a man hits his slave in the eye, whether man or woman, and the eye is blinded, then the slave shall go free because of his eye. And if a master knocks out his slave's tooth, he shall let him go free to pay for the tooth.

Again we have another law protecting the slave.

Sh'mot 21:28-30 "If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox shall be stoned and its flesh not eaten, but the owner shall not be held- unless the ox was known to gore people in the past, and the owner had been notified and still the ox was not kept under control; in that case, if it kills someone, the ox shall be stoned and the owner also shall be killed. But the dead man's relatives may accept a fine instead, if they wish. The judges will determine the amount.

Notice that if the animal has a history of goring and the owner has already been put on notice, the owner is also to be killed if his animal kills someone.

Sh'mot 21:31-32 "The same law holds if the ox gores a boy or a girl. But if the ox gores a slave, whether male or female, the slave's master shall be given thirty pieces of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

Thirty pieces of silver - was the price for a slave. Y'hudah sold out Yeshua for this amount.

Mattityahu (Matthew) 27:3-4 Then when Y'hudah (Judas), who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!"

Sh'mot 21:33-34 "If a man digs a well and doesn't cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it, the owner of the well shall pay full damages to the owner of the animal, and the dead animal shall belong to him.

Sh'mot 21:35-36 "If a man's ox injures another, and it dies, then the two owners shall sell the live ox and divide the price between them-and each shall also own half of the dead ox. But if the ox was known from past experience to gore, and its owner has not kept it under control, then there will not be a division of the income; but the owner of the living ox shall pay in full for the dead ox, and the dead one shall be his.
