Sh'mot 18:10-12 So Yitro said, "Blessed be the L-RD who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the L-RD is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people." Then Yitro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for G-d, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moshe's father-in-law before G-d.
Now I know that the L-RD is greater than all the gods - When we share with others what the L-rd is doing in our lives it helps to strengthen their faith too.
A burnt offering and sacrifices for G-d - Remember that Yitro was not Jewish; he was a gentile believer. Here we see him in his role as a spiritual leader worshiping the L-rd with the elders of Israel. There are not many ways to G-d. It does not matter what language you speak or what country you were born in. There is only one way to worship G-d. It is the same for Jewish and gentile people alike. During the Tanakh period the proper way to worship HaShem was through the burnt offering and sacrifices which all looked forward to the day that Yeshua would die for our sins. Burnt offerings and sacrifices only covered our sin and did not take it away. Yeshua paid the price once and for all for our sins. All we need to do is to confess our sins and accept His death on the execution stake as payment for our sins.
Yeshua was not a human sacrifice as some wrongly assume. The Torah condemns human sacrifice. The Bible does teach that the death of a righteous person has atoning power.
See our study on Human Sacrifice for more information.
What is interesting about this is that Moshe, before judging his people, kissed his father-in-law and then ate a meal before G-d. Yeshua before receiving judgment by the Father (for our wrongs) ate the Pesach (Passover) meal and then later in the evening was kissed by Y'hudah of K'riot in an act of betrayal. (Matt. 26:20-56)
Blessed by the L-rd who delivered many from the hand of the Egyptians and the hand of Pharaoh. Blessed be Yeshua who delivers us from Gehenna and the hand of the nations. He is greater than all the angels (this includes fallen angels).
Hebrews 1:1-14 G-d, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high; having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say, "You art My Son, Today I have begotten You"? And again, "I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me"? And when He again brings the first-born into the world, He says," And let all the angels of G-d worship Him." And of the angels He says, "Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire." But of the Son He says, "Your throne, O G-d, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. "You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore G-d, your G-d, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions." And, "You, L-rd, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of your hands; They will perish, but you remain; And they all will become old as a garment, And as a mantle you will roll them up; As a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, And your years will not come to an end. " But to which of the angels has He ever said, "Sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Sh'mot 18:13-18 And it came about the next day that Moshe sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moshe from the morning until the evening. Now when Moshe's father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What is this thing you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand about you from morning until evening?" And Moshe said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of G-d. When they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and make known the statutes of G-d and His laws." And Moshe's father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out, both yourself and these people who are with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.
You will surely wear out - Yitro offers sound advice to Moshe.
Moshe takes the task of judgment of others all upon himself. The Father gives all judgment over to His Son.
John 5:21-29 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, in order that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of G-d; and those who hear shall live. "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. NAS (cf: Daniel 12:2)
Sh'mot 18:19-23 Now listen to me: I shall give you counsel, and G-d be with you. You be the people's representative before G-d, and you bring the disputes to G-d, then teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they are to walk, and the work they are to do. Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear G-d, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them, as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. And let them judge the people at all times; and let it be that every major dispute they will bring to you, but every minor dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. If you do this thing and G-d so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace."
Leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens - We have this type of judicial system today. We have courts at the local county level, the state level, and finally at the national level. If our nations' "supreme court" was the only court in the land and they had to hear every case in the nation no one would get justice in a timely manner and the judges would never have any time away from work. Creating a hierarchy for the justice system reduced the burden on Moshe and allowed other to shared in the work.
Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Messiah (Christ).
In the future, we will reign with Yeshua.
Revelation 5:9-10 And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for G-d from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our G-d, and they will reign on the earth."
Sh'mot 18:24-25 So Moshe listened to his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. And Moshe chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. And they judged the people at all times; the difficult dispute they would bring to Moshe, but every minor dispute they themselves would judge. Then Moshe bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way into his own land. NAS
The L-rd's work needs to be shared among the believers in the congregation. No one person can do it all. G-d gives the believers special gifts that enable them to carry out His work here on earth.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27 Our bodies have many parts, but the many parts make up only one body when they are all put together. So it is with the "body" of Messiah (Christ). Each of us is a part of the one body of Messiah (Christ). Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) has fitted us all together into one body. We have been baptized into Messiah's (Christ's) body by the one Spirit, and have all been given that same Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). Yes, the body has many parts, not just one part. If the foot says, "I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand," that does not make it any less a part of the body. And what would you think if you heard an ear say, "I am not part of the body because I am only an ear and not an eye"? Would that make it any less a part of the body? Suppose the whole body were an eye-then how would you hear? Or if your whole body were just one big ear, how could you smell anything? But that isn't the way G-d has made us. He has made many parts for our bodies and has put each part just where he wants it. What a strange thing a body would be if it had only one part! So he has made many parts, but still there is only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, "I don't need you." The head can't say to the feet, "I don't need you." And some of the parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary. Yes, we are especially glad to have some parts that seem rather odd! And we carefully protect from the eyes of others those parts that should not be seen, while of course the parts that may be seen do not require this special care. So G-d has put the body together in such a way that extra honor and care are given to those parts that might otherwise seem less important. This makes for happiness among the parts, so that the parts have the same care for each other that they do for themselves. If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. Now here is what I am trying to say: All of you together are the one body of Messiah (Christ), and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.
