Braky, Alex, and I are all starting to feel our age and decided to take a springtime trip that would not leave us all on NHS knee surgery waiting lists... so we went to Redwood National Park. Here we are at the ranger station before we started the trek. | ![]() |
![]() | It's hard describe the height of the trees. They are, on average, the size of fifteen story buildings. Alex is the spek at the bottom of these redwoods. |
We were trekking in the earliest part of the season and most of the trails had not been cleared yet. We met with a number of obstacles. This photo shows an enormous treefall. Nearly fifty meters of trail were simply obliterated by fallen trees. | ![]() |
![]() | There were few bridges, but in most places were able to improvise with the terrain around us. |
In other places we simply had no choice but to ford the rivers. This river was particularly deep and we seriously considered walking through a mile of swamp instead of making this crossing. Braky was our scout (aka the sacrificial lamb). We sent him first to find the safe route and then carried his bags along for him. | ![]() |
![]() | What is by far the most amazing aspect of Redwood National Park is the fact that you can go from dense old growth forest to beach in mere moments. Due to swampy inland conditions we chose to trek along the coast for a few miles... and saw elk along the way! |
