Scottish Highland Drumming And Percussion
As much as I love to play the bagpipes, I also have a passion for percussion, kit drumming, Fife and Drum music and in particular Scottish Highland snare drumming. Almost parallel to my piping studies, I have learned the art of Scottish style drumming which has many of its roots in the rudimental playing of the Swiss School of drumming in Basel. The style of Scottish Highland snare drumming has been perfected of the last 30 years in continiously progress and is today regarded as one of the most

technical and rudimental styles of drumming.
I have to credit most of my drumming knowledge to my older brother Henry, who himslef is a very accomplished snare drummer, musician and instructor, and to drummers of the world famous pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. For many years I have only played by ear and have tried to perfect my playing skills by watching other drummers. I seriously began drumming and percusion studies when I enrolled as student at the music department of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. There I have been an active member of the University's marching band drum corps, percussion section of the symphonic band and also the music department's Percussion Ensemble. During this time I have not only been trained professionally by the staff of UNCP but furthermore been exposed to different generes of music and had fantastic performance opportinuties. Between 1995 and 2002 I have played on and off percussion and drum kit in several different bands and generes ranging from Celtic-Fusion, FolkRock, Alternative Rock, Underground, Punk, BritPop and Experimental music.

I also competed in beginners and later advanced snare drumming contests in Germany and Holland. Occasionally I filled in as snare or bass drummer for pipe band performances.
After almost 3 years of absence I am getting back into drumming.
I  have been involved with Ma'at International Dance Arts as Middle Eastern percussionist. I also try to stay busy as session drummer in the Greenville area.

Since 2003, I have been officially garded as Grade 2 snare drummer by the EUSPBA.
Eventhough that I have no percussion teaching background I also helped some interested students and faculty members at UNCP to get a insight view of Scottish drumming and taught them the very basics of Highland drumming.
In my current position as main instructor and pipe major of the 84th Highlanders Pipe Band in Greenville, SC, I will also function as drumming instructor for new incoming drummers. I will offer snare drumming instruction on beginner and intermediate level.
