Behind the Piping
I bagan to play the Scottish bagpipes in 1987 and have achieved considerable success in solo and pipe band competitions throughout Europe and the south eastern USA.I had various instructors from Canada, Germany and the British Armed Forces in Germany. Since the last 20 years I have traveled and performed extensively with several German and US civil pipe bands. I even had the privellege to practice and/or to be a guest player with some finest British Army pipe bands, such as the pipes and drums of the Queen's Royal Hussars, The Black Watch (3rd Bn.Royal Regiment of Scotland) ,The 1st Bn. IrishGuards, The Royal Highland Fusiliers (2nd Bn. Royal Regiment of Scotland), The Kings Own Scottish  Borderers (now 1st Bn. Royal Regiment of Scotland), The Highlanders (4th Bn. The Royal Regiment of Scotland), and the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Over the years I have established myself as a Open/Professional solo piper and gained recognition from famous players such as Roddy MacLeod, Ed Neigh, Pipe Major Gavin Stoddart and the famous Pipe Major Angus MacDonald  to name a few. Since 1991 I have competed in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, England, Scotland, USA and Canada. For a complete list of my awards and achievements please visit my awards section on this website.
Over the last 20 years I have been an active member of several successful pipe bands incl. The Scandinavian Seaways Pipe Band (first German pipe band ever to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland and German Pipe Band Champions 1990),
the Heather and District Pipes and Drums (German Pipe Band Champions 1994-1995), the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Pipe Band (South Eastern Champions), and most recently
the City of Washington Pipe Band (1999 Grade 2 World Champions).
I am  not only a competive  open grade piper but also a very talented Grade 2 snare and drum kit drummer, which is a unique situation in the piping world. Most of my drumming knowledge I credit to my older brother Henry Kresse, who is a competitive Grade 1 snare drummer and drumming instructor in Germany, and to drummers in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Please visit the drumming section on my website for more information. From 1994-1995 I had the opportinuty to play bagpipes, percussion and drums for the Hamburg based Scottish/ Irish folk/fusion band The Highland Connection. After the depature of Pipe Major David Johnston in 1995, I took over and led the Grade 4 and 3 German Pipe Band champion Heather and District Pipes and Drums  (Fallingbostel/Hamburg) succesfully through a busy program of engagements throughout Germany, Holland and Denmark. Since 1993 I have been also tutoring many new bagpipe students in Germany and the USA and functioned as trainer and consultant with several pipe bands. Performances for HRH the Prince and Princess of Wales, Scottish icon Rod Stewart, Bass Beer, Newcastle Brown Ale, and several appearances on German, American and Scottish television and radio are only a few of my career highlights.
In the summer of 2001 I moved with my wife Stephanie to Greenville, South Carolina,USA. After a short absence from the piping scene I became  a member in good standings with the
EUSPBA. Since 2002 I have been involved with several Grade 4 and Grade 3 pipe bands in the Southern US and had invitations to guest with  Grade 1 and Grade 2 pipe bands in Canada, Australia and the UK.. Since 2003 I have been ranking in the Top 10 of Grade 1 (semi-professional) pipers in the eastern conference of the EUSPBA.In 2004 I became the highest ranking Grade 1 piper in the southern US. I have also been awarded the distinguished title of Colonel Christoph Kresse by the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. I am the first German citizen to ever receive this honor. I am the President and founder of the Pipers Club of the Carolinas that promotes the art and music of the Scottish/Irish bagpipes through out the southern US. In the winter of 2005 I have been upgraded from Grade 1 to the Open/Professional level, the highest honor and achievement a piper can gain in the piping world.
Beside my very busy schedule of piping engagements I am a Audio Engineering major at
Clemson University and I am an official agent for Alasdair MacDonald bagpipe covers.
I am consatntly seeking to improve my piping and drumming skills and take part in workshops, and certifications in order to provide the best quality performances and instruction to my customers and students.
The Piping Institute and the National Piping Centre of Glasgow, Scotland have awarded me with the intermediate piping certificate and the performers certificate in 2005. I am the only performance certified bagpiper in the south eastern USA. Since September 2007, I am the pipe major of the
84th Highlanders Pipe Band in Greenville, South Carolina.
