NO SURGERY IN SWEDEN

In 1990-97 it was done about 3000 such operations at Swedish hospitals. More than each tenth patient was less than 20 years old.

Also several hundred Norwegians traveled to Sweden to have the operation done.

Many did regret deeply afterwords- mainly because of the bothersome heavy sweat on other parts on their body after the operation. Jerry Rudenwall had his surgery in Borås in 1992.

-Since, I have always been dressed in black, to hide the sweat. But inside it feels like someone has poured two buckets of water on me- one in front and one on my back. Special in summer, when the temperature is over 20 C (68F), it's like hell, says the 56-years old man to BT.

-I know other patients who sweat like this the whole year, and who has to change clothes many times during the day. There is a lot of personal tragedies after this surgery.

Rudenvall is executive member of The Sympathetic Association (FFSO) in Sweden. The Association was built in 1999, and had 300 members at the most.

Those maintained they had got far too little information about possible complications, and the “patient revolt” got a lot attention in the news in Sweden.

In November 2000, Sosialstyrelsen* sent out a circular that told that operations should only be done in extreme cases of severe sweating and blushing. The reason: the possibility of very serious side effects.
* (Sosialstyrelsen is a government run expert-and supervision authority in Sweden. They work among other matters, with social and health questions.)

- Today this operations are very ,very rare in Sweden. Probably, it is done only a hand full operations each year, says the professor in surgery in Uppsala, Ulf Haglund, member of the expert board in Sosialstyrelsen.

In Sweden today, the restrictions for operations on a person younger than 20, is very strict.
Besides, other specialists then the surgeons, are the ones who make the decision if the surgery should be done.

Only a few, younger patients, has got compensation from the Swedish government.
- But today we are a forgotten group of patients in Sweden. Many patients around are suffering, while the sweat flow, says Rudenwall with a resigned voice.

- In Norway maximum fifty patients have the sympathectomy each year. What is your point of view ?
- Fifty Norwegian patients are fifty patients too much, he answer prompt.
