THE GENES OF SWEATY PALMS
3/31/2002
Many people may get sweaty hands when they're nervous, but for some it goes to excess. That's when it becomes hyperhidrosis sweaty palm syndrome.

Dr. Samuel Ahn/vascular surgeon: "They literally have sweat beading on their hands. They can literally shake their hands, and it's dripping off their hands."
It's been more than a nuisance for 9th grader Lindsy Barquist.
Lindsy Barquist/sweaty palms sufferer: "I was in gymnastics when I was little. Like serious into it, and I'd slip around and I'd have to use chalk a lot. I play tennis, varsity tennis, and it's really hard like to grasp the racket."
Even 4th grader Tyler Fahrion finds sweaty palms tough to live with.
Tyler Fahrion/sweaty palms sufferer: "It's harder to write because the pencil slips a lot, and when I'm reading a book, my hands get all sweaty."
Tyler's mom knows it's hard on her son. She lived with the problem for years.
Wendy Fahrion/mother: "You know, my mom used to always say, 'Oh, it's just nerves, you know, just don't worry about it, don't think about it, and they won't sweat.'"
But Dr. Ahn's research shows Wendy, Tyler, and Lindsy inherited the problem.
Dr. Samuel Ahn/vascular surgeon: "This is the pedigree on Wendy Fahrion - it's her family tree basically."
But there's hope: an operation that can dry up those hands.
Dr. Samuel Ahn/vascular surgeon: "The surgery itself is called thorascopic sympathectomy, and that's where we go in with a little scope, into the chest, and cut the sympathetic nerves."
It worked for Wendy, and she finally has dry hands. A number of hospitals, including Temple University, perform surgery for sweaty palms. But it's not usually done for young people who are still growing, since there are concerns it could affect bone growth.
