Procedure to Run a Diagnostic on your Workstation - by Jodeman

  1. Start with the system off.
  2. Press the "Stop for Maintenance" button with your mouse or alternatively press "Esc"
  3. You will then see six options.
    1- Stop System
    2- Install System Software
    3- Run Diagnostics
    4- Recovery Systems
    5- Enter Command Monitor
    6- Select Keyboard Layout
  4. From that System Maintenance Menu, you have two options for testing the system: You have two choices at this point:
    1. Run Option 3 (Run Diagnostics) or
    2. Press the "5" or "F5" key or use the mouse to select: (Enter Command Monitor)

The following is the procedure for running a test through Method "b":

Type hinv to view all the devices that are present in the system. If there are devices that you are hooked up to the system that aren't present in the hinv, please shut down the system and check all your connections and the SCSI ID's.
If all the device are present, then type "ide fe" to run all the diagnostics for you.

"ide fe" runs all the tests on all the devices. The "fe" extension stands for Field Engineer.

For a list of all the IDE tests. Press Ctrl-C during the test and type ? to get a long list of all the IDE tests. These IDE tests can take almost an hour. Time to find something else to do and check back every 10-15 mins to see if any ERROR messages appear or not.

Jodeman NOTE: The above diagnostic tests are able to find quite a few hardware problems. However, I've come across systems in the past that have passed all the tests but then I discover a bad part later on. I use the above diagnostics as a starting point when testing a system.

Testing the keyboard & mouse
  1. Boot up the system and log on as root.
  2. In the Toolchest, choose SYSTEM and RUN Confidence Test.
  3. There are options to test the mouse, keyboard and any other peripheral (ie. Camera, DAT drive) hooked up to your system.
