To Format & Prepare a New System Disk from the CD-Rom. - by Jodeman

  1. From the System Maintenance Menu, go to the Command Monitor.
  2. Type hinv to find out the scsi ID and controller number of the CD-rom.
  3. With Irix O/S CD in the CD-Rom, type from the Command Monitor:

    boot -f dksc(0,4,8)sashARCS dksc(0,4,7)stand/fx.ARCS --x
For systems with the 32 bit ARCS PROM, namely Indigo, Indigo2, Indy, Onyx, Challenge and O2.

    boot -f dksc(0,4,8)sash64 dksc(0,4,7)stand/fx.64 --x
For systems with the 64-bit ARCS PROM (ie. Power Challenge, Power Onyx, Power Indigo2, Indigo2 10000, Origin, Onyx2 & Octane, mainly all R8000 and R10000 products.)

    boot -f dksc(X,Y,8)sashIP12 dksc(X,Y,7)stand/fx.IP12 --x
    For Indigo R3000 IP12

    In the above example:

    • 0 is the Controller number of CD-Rom
    • 4 is the SCSI id of the CD-Rom. This number changes with CD-Rom's SCSI id.

    The command is as follows:

    boot -f dksc(Ctrl_ID,Scsi_ID,8)sashARCS dksc(Ctrl_ID,Scsi_ID,7)stand/fx.ARCS --x

This will load sash from the CD. This will be the proper version for the proper OS version. This will also load the miniroot version of fx. The same utility as if you were on the command line.

If the above command doesn't work, try the command with a / before "stand"

  4. If it is a brand new disk, Irix automatically creates the necessary SGI labels after typing the command "boot -f" above.

    Just to be sure,

    1. Go to the [L]abel menu, [C]reate, [A]ll
    2. Then to repartition the disk, choose [r]epartition option. From this menu you can set this disk to be a [ro]otdrive or set it as 2nd [o]ptiondrive

You will then see the following:

-- please choose one (? For help, .. to quit menu) --
      [ro]otdrive	[o]ptiondrive	[e]xpert
      [u]srrootdrive	[re]size

From here, you can choose any option to partition the drive you want.
(NOTE. Do not use the [e]xpert option unless you're very familiar with the procedure.)
    3. Next sync the drive settings with: [l]abel and [sy]nc
  5. Format the Disk Drive
  6. Reboot after the format is finished.
  7. Choose Option 2 from the System Maintenance Menu to Install System Software (Operating System)
