The Indigo2 motherboard has 3 banks of 4 slots for memory. A set of four simms of memory, SGI suggests, should be put in the first in the bank of 4 closest (Bank A) to the power supply.. which is the bank furthest from the CPU.

The memory simms are installed into the motherboard leaning away from the CPU towards the back of the system. I don't know why they designed the memory banks this way. With "Bank A" filled up with memory.. I have to pop off these memory simms before I can install the memory into the 2nd "Bank B". If, in the future, I wish to add yet another memory kit to "Bank C", I have to pop off all 8 simms in the other two banks before I can install the 3rd memory kit.

The system will work fine if you fill up your memory banks starting from Bank C, despite the recommended opposite by SGI. By doing so, you won't have to go through the trouble of unlatching other memory kits to install a new one. I would recommend placing your first memory kit into Bank C. Then, if you want to add another kit to Bank B, you won't have to bother the first kit. Heck, the system will work fine even if you only had one kit in the middle Bank B.

Update
"As per your web page it does make a difference which bank you put the memory in an Indigo 2 Extreme or a Indigo2 Max Impact.

Errors will come up in High graphics Apps and installing IRIX 6.5.4 may fail I did have them from the front to back and when I changed to the back to the front all my very little errors and strange problems disappeared forever."

They require 72 pin, memory simms. Parity 70 or 60nS will work. I've been told that the simms with gold leads at the bottom where they plug into the memory sockets are preferable. Memory with tin leads will work but will oxidize & may corrode the simm socket a few years down the line. EDO memory won't work.

You can install as little as 16 mb (1 kit of 4x4mb) of memory up to a maximum of 384mb. (3 kits of 128 consisting of 4x32mb simms)

If you're lucky enough to have an R10,000 Impact system, 64mb Simms work. I've seen an Indigo R10,000 system, Solid Impact with 448mb consisting of a 256mb kit (4x64mb), a 128mb kit and a 64mb kit.

The maximum is a nice 768mb of memory. :-D I've been told that they also work in Power Indigo2 R8000 Indigo2 Impact systems also.

Depending on who you talk to, the system will only recognize 640mb maximum but I've seen others post that they've had no problems with putting 768mb in their R10k Impact Systems. Personally, I've seen an Indigo2 R10000 195mhz system recognize 768mb of memory.

If I'm mistaken or am missing anything, I'm sure someone else will be more than happy to correct me or fill in the gaps. :)
