MESSAGE
by Renoa Heartilly

Hinata was confused.

Every day she would gladly chop up vegetables first thing in the morning, fry eggs and season the rice cakes; and everyday he would take the lunch box without a word.

She loved making him boxed lunches, because they always came back empty.

So today he absolutely refused that she made him anything.

He'd refused to drink tea with her when they woke up, refused to eat anything while dressing for today's low-ranked missions.

He even left the boxed lunch on the counter as he left, his keys were on top of the box when he grabbed them and left.

She was crushed.

Why was he not talking to her?

Hinata picked at her fingernails and glanced worriedly at the door, he'd left hours ago but something in her heart hoped he'd come back and say: oh I forgot my lunch; and then every thing would be OK.

But he isn't appearing at all.

Did he find something weird in yesterday's lunch?

Had he suddenly gotten disgusted with her to the point that he wouldn't want to share a meal?

She hadn't had anything today either, too worried to stomach anything.

Her cold tea sat at the coffee table, now transformed into Ice Tea thanks to winter's weather.

She breathed deep, and turned again; the door was opened and he walked in with snow on his shoulders and a plastic bag in each hand.

"S- Sasuke-" She was interrupted when he made a right turn and entered the kitchen. Tears threatened to fall after being locked up for so long, but she hoped he would be able to tell her honestly what was wrong before she let the waterworks do their thing.

"N- Ne." she stood in the doorway of the small kitchen, rubbing a hand against her forearm and watching as he unpacked a small box of sweet potatoes and a several tin cans.

He didn't look at her, but his attention was undivided.

"A- Are you a- angry at me?" she waited for a very, very long moment for his answer, her eyes studying every move and focused on his mouth, awaiting judgment.

"No." He finally spoke, his voice unusually strained.

She shivered and stepped closer. "Are you sick?" he had been somewhat pale today, in her worry she hadn't noticed his sickness!

His answer was shoving a small box into her arms with a curt command. "Burn these."

She walked out with a slump in her shoulders and heat in her chest. He'd never been this cold towards her, she must have unknowingly upset him very hard yesterday.

Or something…

She threw herself at the soft couch in the living room and peered into the box, several candles rattled within and she aligned them on the coffee table with disinterest.

She lit them one by one with a thin lighter- he used to smoke, and rested back to watch the dancing flames.

I have to apologize…

A tissue magically made its way to her hands and she tried hard not to be upset about the whole day.

He probably just wants to go back to living alone, or feeling the way he used to back before they became together.

Yes, that must be it, the magazine said so.

Hinata took another deep breath and tried to calm herself, it probably isn't her fault, and it's just him being his moody self.

Yes, that's just it.

The kitchen door shut with a slap and he came over with a tray in his hands. The lights were turned off before he sat next to her, illuminated by the scented candles.

She blinked repeatedly, and watched with disbelief as he opened small containers of Sekihan, sweet potatoes and soup.

The chopsticks he unwrapped were a beautiful crimson color and had a gleaming tip with the tiniest ornament entrapped in the material.

She didn't know how far her jaw was dropped until he placed a clump of rice in her mouth.

"Happy birthday." He said, his face just slightly colorful- was he blushing or is it just the glow from the candles?

"Huh?" she nearly choked on her mouthful and held his hand in desperation. "Y- Y- You were… Huh?"

He glanced away and pretended to be busy peeling a potato. "I have a sore throat." He said with a rasp in his voice. "And I didn't want to ruin it." He glanced at her when she didn't say anything. "Why so shocked?"

The tears of worry that she tried so hard to keep at bay dribbled down her face happily, and she fell against him in a tight hug.

So it was a completely different message he was sending! Not displeasure, but keeping her curious long enough to surprise her!

She had been worried over nothing! He wasn't upset at her at all!

It was just her…

Birthday?

She glanced up, "I- It's my b- birthday?" his nod worried her, "T- Today?"

His brow arched before he found it amusing to shove the warm potato to her lips. "Obaasan."

Her face flushed and she bit down on the sweet vegetable with passion, her fingers found his ticklish parts and there was birthday rice and potato peel everywhere.
