THE HISTORY OF JIGSAW AS A NOVEL
Besides the original notes I took on the production of the story that was originally going to be Jigsaw (I need to find those notes!), there have been two unfinished drafts of Jigsaw.
The original version of Jigsaw was inspired while I was staring at a partly-assembled jigsaw puzzle. I had recently finished playing Lunar: Silver Star Story, and I decided that I wanted to make it a bit like a video game RPG. It was going to be about a girl from a world not unlike our own who gets transported to the land of Jigsaw. I don't remember much about it, but I remember Tione wasn't named Tione and Aleric wasn't named Aleric. There was this princess character too... there was something about collecting magical puzzle pieces or something. One scene from this original one that survived awhile was the glass volcano thingy in the caves.
The very first draft wasn't that good. In the original draft, Katrina switched back and forth between her more chaste counterpart, Lea (the girl she was before she was cursed) at the most inopportune moments. Kao, Xerei and White had not been created yet, but there was a sorceress called Serayika in the cast. They met her in the caves. She was much older than the rest of the characters, around 30 if I remember correctly. I decided that her powers were too strong and she didn't have much of a personality, so I took her out of the story. I'm thinking about reviving her character in the part of a faerie named Sephia. I thought she could be kind of a high-strung type who gets mad and exhasperated easily. Yet another great character for Kao to interact with.
In that first draft, the characters got as far as Sela.
The second draft was better. I started the second draft when I moved from our old Macintosh to a more recent computer. I printed the thing out and rewrote it a bit as I retyped it. I didn't get as far that time. My computer crashed not long afterwards. I thought I had lost everything that had been on it, including the second draft. So I started a third draft, which is the current draft I'm working on. I got the second draft back, of course. You can read it here on the site if you like.
There were a couple of throw-out characters in the second draft. There was Nienn Rboobu, an old man who lives on the shores of Rboobu River. He was pretty funny sometimes, but he turned out to be basically an elderly, male version of Tione; their personalities were too similar. Another character was Prince Middling or Mediocre or something. He was Prince Charming's somewhat less spectacular younger brother. He wasn't too bright and he was very... ... mediocre. I can't remember why I threw out that character, but I did.
I'll have more to say on this later. That's all for now.
