to Himalayan cats of Australia

"Himalayans are Persians and Exotic Shorthairs in pretty clothes".

In the following pages you will meet Himalayan breeders from all over Australia, who are trying to improve this beautiful Persian. Some breed specific patterns and speciality colours only whilst others concentrate on the core base standard colours of the Himalayan.Recognized colours are Seal - Blue - Chocolate - Lilac - Red - Cream - Seal Tortiepoint - Blue Tortiepoint - Chocolate Tortiepoint - LilacTortiepoint in solid, tabby (Lynx) and smoke points in all the above colours.

The Himalayan cat of today is not a longhaired Siamese, and only shares its coat pattern with that breed. In fact, animals such as rabbits and goats, with light body colouring and darker point colours are found near the Himalayan mountain range in Asia, so therefore the coat pattern is really Himalayan, not Siamese.

The Himalayan cat is a heavy boned cat with a profuse coat. The head should be broad and round with a short nose, large round eyes and small neat ears. Eye colour is blue, the bluer the better.

The Himalayan Persian or Colourpoint as it is sometimes called has been around for many years. Two catteries in the UK namely Mingchu and Briary worked together to produce the first Himalayan. The first cross was a Seal Point Siamese and a Black Persian which gave carriers of the pointed gene. Kittens were kept from this mating and the breed went forward from there. American cat breeders became interested in the breed and once they began breeding them the love of the Himalayan was greatly expanded. One of the first Himalayans imported from the UK into Australia was a Mingchu Seal Point. Following there were many more imports that came into Australia.

The Himalayan does not resemble the Himalayan of years ago. The old style Himalayan resembled a slightly fatter version of the Siamese. Breeders started using solid Persians to the Himalayans giving them carriers with better boning, shorter bodies, bigger heads and smaller ears. By breeding a carrier to Himalayan resulted in Himalayans who were closer to the standard and many have taken out Best in Shows. Over the years the Himalayan has got better and better but still they need to improve the eye colour.

Himalayans are outgoing, intelligent, playful cats and can be quite vocal. They like human company and have a dog-like trait of following their owners about the house. As Himalayans are Persians, the coat needs the same care and attention with thorough brushing & combing. Kittens are born white and the points start to colour at about two weeks. The number of kittens in a litter average four to six.

Hope you enjoy your visit to our site; please feel free to contact any of our breeders.
