Google / Yahoo / AOL
Submit to Google for free, and appear in the search
results of Yahoo and AOL as well.
- Only the top-level page
from a site is necessary; you do not need to submit
each individual page. Their crawler, Googlebot,
will be able to find the rest
Find out when Google last
indexed your site:
In the form below, replace allinurl:www.your-domain.com
with your domain name:
On the results page click the link that reads ...
Archived copy ... At the top of the resulting
page the date is when it was last indexed

Google PageRank
To see any page's PageRank, you can either
install the Google
Toolbar, or if the site is listed at
Open Directory, use this tool
PageRank is just one factor of many that needs
to be looked at when optimizing a site for Google.
PageRank is Google's method of measuring a page's"importance."
When all other factors, such as the Title tag
and keywords, are taken into account, Google
uses PageRank to adjust results so sites that
are more "important" will move up
in the results page of a user's search
Google looks at which pages link to each
other to determine this importance.
If Page A links to Page B, then Page A is saying
that Page B is an important page.
- PageRank only looks at the voting ability
of incoming links to a page, and how much
they recommend that page.
- Every page of a site can have a PageRank,
not just the main page
- You can pass PageRank to different pages
of your own site through the internal linking
structure of the various pages
- Naming and titling hyperlinks using keyphrases
is a separate thing from PageRank. Using keyphrases
within your links may help with your search
engine rankings, but not your PageRank.
The Google founders published their original
research paper at Stanford
"The PageRank given to Page A by a Page
B pointing to it is decreased with each link
to anywhere that exists on Page B. That means
a page's PageRank is essentially a measure
of its vote; it can split that vote between
one link or two links or many more, but its
overall voting power will always be the same."
In other words, for PageRank purposes,
it's better to have a page with only a few links
on it pointing to your site, than a page with
tons of links on it pointing to your site.
If a page has a PageRank of seven (out of ten),
and it's filled with many links to other sites,
those other sites only get a tiny portion of
that seven PR because the PageRank gets divided
amongst all the links. So in effect, just because
a page has a high PageRank, it doesn't mean
it's the best one to be linked from.

AlltheWeb
This Norwegian index
is almost as good as Google.

AltaVista
Still one of the big guns,
despite its tempermental ranking system. They
let you pay
to get listed faster
Free submission: You must visit this page.
It's tedious, but helps reduce their spam problems

Inktomi
This is the database that
feeds iWon, 4anything, Overture, ICQ, LookSmart, MSN
Search, Snap and soon Yahoo. Submitting to Hotbot
is the simplest way of getting into Inktomi's
index. Read the official
guidelines on what they do and don't like.
ALERT: The main
Hotbot site no longer accepts submissions, so I've
changed it to their UK site still which still has
a submission
form but expect it to disappear soon, and
don't rely on it working. It seems the only way now
is to pay.

Inktomi's ranking methods
Inktomi has created a Map of the Web that
includes 1.7 billion documents. Through this
web map, Inktomi selects data, which it includes
in several databases. These are Best of Web
(BOW), which is some 110 million documents,
GEN3 which is around 500 million documents,
their Eurocluster, which is 110 million documents
and the Asia Pacific cluster (APAC) of around
55 million documents.
Aside from paid inclusion, Inktomi can find
sites that are submitted through add URL pages
via one of their search partners like HotBot.
They can also find sites by crawling the web
and following links. When a site is initially
found (by whichever method), it usually winds
up in the GEN3 database. If it has been submitted
via a search partner as a free submission,
the URL may be subject to a penalty - however,
if the penalized URL is found later by Inktomi
spiders crawling the web via another link
the penalty is lifted. The GEN3 index is generally
refreshed monthly.
The best way to become a BOW site is to have
other BOW sites link to you. Although links
from directories such as Yahoo, ODP and LookSmart
are important and help - they will not guarantee
inclusion. You need sites that are already
in BOW to link to you, which are on a similar
theme and of high stature.
Paid inclusion
neither helps (nor hinders) inclusion into
BOW. Selection is purely done on the "merit"
of the site as viewed by Inktomi through its
map of the Web. In many ways, this is similar
to the way Google looks at sites through its
PageRank system - but Inktomi's BOW is a slightly
more "exclusive" club.

Some Tricks and Ideas
- Create a site map - a simple page with text links
to every other page in your site. Keep it up-to-date.
Submit your site map each time, and the spiders
will find everything
- If your site map has over 100 links, break it
into several pages (Google, for example, only looks
at the first 100 links on a page)
- Submit every time you update a page. For dynamic
sites, trying submitting several days in a row,
so the search engine can tell you have fresh content
- Any site that promises to submit your site to
thousands of search engines is a waste of time,
and usually leads to lots of spam
- Never pay for a submission service. Either do
it easily through here (or the official Add URL
pages), or use legitimate 3rd party paid submission
services - see this page

Non-English Indexes
The people of these countries
use their own search engines a lot. Helps if your
site is in their langauge, because they will be searching
for keywords in their own language.
FRANCE - Caloweb,

GERMANY - Abacho,

Other Indexes
There isn't much point
submitting to the smaller engines, but it's harmless
if you have time on your hands.

Dead Engines
There is no point trying
to submit to these search engines...
- Excite - dead, now uses pay-per-click results
- Direct Hit - replaced with Teoma
- Northern Light - no longer available to the general
public
- Lycos - now use AlltheWeb's index

Banned?
For one reason or another
your site might have been blacklisted. This can
happen by accident, so contact these folk if your
submissions aren't working (remember that some engines
like AltaVista can take 6 months to update their
index). Be patient - replying to you will not be
a priority unless you have paid them for a listing.
- AltaVista - send an online inquiry via
their web based contact
form
- FAST/Alltheweb - try their feedback
form
- Google - email [email protected]
with "reinclusion request" as the subject
- Inktomi - send an email inquiry to: [email protected].
Inktomi covers a wide range of major search sites
powered at least in part by their engine, including,
HotBot, Looksmart, MSN, Overture, and others. See
the current list of Inktomi
partners
