II. Description and Analysis
When we reached the Lamak river, we found that the river was destroyed due to the extractions
of sand and gravel. Hilongos Sand and Gravel Aggregates is the name of the company who
conducts quarrying on the community of Lamak. We also observed that the river doesn't flow in one direction
because the sands were not uniform. The river is becoming deeper and deeper. It became
harmful for us to pass there. And the depth of the river is very confusing from
shallow then to a deep one. When we gone there, we saw lots of workers who were busy
working all over the river. There were about 20 workers who were assigned there.
Some were driving the machines and some were taking snacks. But as we interviewed
the manager of the company, he answered that quarrying is not a tremendous activity in a society,
instead, it helps people by means of livelihood because people who have no employmnent
will have a possibility to earn money because of it. Through quarring activity, donation
were given during fiestas and some pressure pumps to those who have none. A "Purok Shed"
is also donated to the people living in Lamak and Proteccion. We also found out that this
company also supplies cements, sand and gravel to make the uncemented area a cemented one.

Quarrying!
Behind its danger, our knowledge can prove that
it helps in our economy. But not jubilant to know that humanity suffers due to
this particular activity.
Quarrying- it's a business but we can replace it
by a more helpful and dangerous free business. Though it helped in economy it
still shows disadvantage to society. If rivers are becoming empty (of course
pertaining to sand gravels) that big possibility of danger will damage the
living of people. This activity is effectively done through decades but the
improvement it said can't be proven nowadays, worth of living is decreasing a
lot of business can be produced that wouldn't jeopardize both society and
humanity, so why not choose?
Living in safe is pleasure to everybody, so here
are some lists of the possible solutions to these problems:
There shall proper implementation of the policies
, rules and regulations.
Close monitoring and evaluation of the state
baranggay.
Self discipline.
The captain of the baranggay must be aware of the
happenings in his society.
He must impose policies, rules and regulations
regarding the extractions of sand and gravel.
V. Appendix- Interview
Here are the answers that we gathered last
October 30, 2003 at the Gymanasium during the visit of the DENR presence of one
of the environmentalists.
Q-What are the problems of the environment today?
A- The problems are said as solid waste pollution
, coastal resource management, over exploitation of resources (illegal cutting,
soil erosion etc.), global warming, acid rain which occured in Isabel, Leyte
last 1990's and overpopulation because more people more possibilities of
destructions.
