60th Birthday Reunion Newsletter
September 2003
By Pauline Yano

When Richard asked me to be in charge of the newsletter, I thought it was just to take notes of our meetings and send them out. Well, needless to say, I have been informed that being in charge of the newsletter was writing to the classmates about the reunion, reminders and whatever. I will try, but remember, ARNIAN (file this into your gray matter and when I am finished with the newsletter, you will know what it means, if I remember to tell you).

As we look back over our last six decades, I now know why my parents acted as they didspeaking louder, taking extra naps, walking slower, complaining about aches, pains, and whatever else. I see the younger generation rolling their eyes and shaking their heads as they watch and hear us. By golly, we have become our parents. Oh, well, welcome to the years of reasonreason to get up, reason to exercise, reason to keep our brains active, reason to keep in touch with friends, classmates, and reason to celebrate our 60th birthday next year.

I received this information from Alma and I thought Id share it with you. Facts of 1944, the year we were born. 1) President-Franklin Roosevelt; 2)Vice-President-Henry Wallace; 3)Inventions-Auto Sequence Computer; 4)Life-expectancy-62.9 years; 5)Dow Jones Average-143; 6)Average Income-$2,378; 7)Cost of Home-$3,475; 8)Cost of Car-$975; 9)Loaf of Bread-$0.10; 10)Gallon of Gas-$0.15; 11)Gallon of Milk-$0.62. It is rather interesting to see the price of goods and compare it with what we pay today. Thanks, Alma for sending this to me.

The 60th birthday reunion actually begins on Friday, October 8, 2004. Many classmates expressed an interest in going to see the Celine Dion Show, so tickets will be purchased for the show on Thursday night, October 7, 2004. Save your money, as the cost of the show ranges from $150 up. There will be a service charge included in that price. Remember, tickets must be purchased several months ahead of the show date. If at the last minute you want to see the show, it will be impossible.

We plan to have a video show. If you have snapshots or photos from your grade school, intermediate, and high school you want to share, find someone who has a scanner and have them scan it on to a CD. I know Cal Nishimura was doing this. If any of you want to volunteer your services, let your classmates and committee know. In the next newsletter we will inform you where you can send the disks. It will be fun to see the Through the Years video show. The deadline for sending in the photos will be March 31, 2004. Please include a one sentence caption for each photo.

The Las Vegas group is planning a Scavenger Hunt around the Fremont experience. This will take place on Friday night, with the winners announced on Saturday night. Other activities for Friday golfing, shopping for all those interested, photo taking, raffle, singing, dancing, and old age tests. On Saturday golfing, shopping for all those interested, line dancing, the video show, and dinner. Other activities may be scheduled.

Getting together for our 60th birthday in October, 2004, will be a passage for all of us. Join the fun, join your classmates, and celebrate our lives. Save the dates, save your cash, register early, encourage any classmates to come and enjoy this special reunion. We want it to be a memorable event. Let us know of any new addresses, email and residential.

To Ben Matsubara. Thank you for donating the two lucky number prizes at the reunion last year. My stay at the Hapuna Prince was fabulous. Enjoyed every minute I was there.

Now, I bet many of you know what ARNIAN is. Well, it stands for, A Ralston Nagata I Am Not!

I was contemplating what I could do to encourage all of you to consider making the trip to Las Vegas next year. Well, I composed a haiku, and I wrote words to the melody, Hilo, My Hometown. (I am taking this job seriously, as you can see.)

I know its kind of corny, but, what the heck. Were 60 only once, and we can pretty much get away with a lot. I hope this newsletter finds all of you in good health and spirits.

Gee, I went through the entire newsletter without mentioning anything about donations. Well, the committee will gladly accept donations from any of you. You may include the donation with your registration form or any other time. The check should be made out to Sharon Sakoda, who will be handling the registration of our birthday reunion.

Aloha,
Pauline
