Tuesday, May 21, 2002 Ralston Nagata's Residence, 1821 Laukahi Place, Honolulu, HI 96821, Ph. 373-9357

Attendees: Ralston Nagata, Matthew Daog, Ainsley Ah Sing, Naomi (Nakayama) and Mel Matsumoto, Bobo Claveria, Mike Chun, Herbert Hamada, Arlene Yanagihara, Ida Mae (Fong) Hamasaki, Aloha Daisy (Makaimoku) Gellert, Kenneth Sakai, David Woo, Patsy (Onuma) Nakamura, Ben Matsubara, Donna (Saito) Hoshide

Call To Order: Meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Matthew Daog at 7:48 p.m. Minutes of the April 23, 2002 meeting were approved as read and circulated.

1. Committee Reports:

a. Grads Night (Friday, July 26): Donna reported that all is confirmed and in order for the 6-11 p.m. evening at Waialae Country Club with the luau menu, Nakasone's entertainment from 6-8 p.m., Ebb Tides from 8-11 p.m., and golf prizes, and trivia activity in between. In follow-up to last meeting's discussion on having leis for the aloha and luau ambiance, a sample of a colorful silk flowered lei available for 99 cents at Marukai store was presented as an option for real plumeria leis in case we are not able to get enough plumerias or other flowers or manpower to sew leis. It was decided that Ralston and Aloha would coordinate lei picking and making for the event, and that preference would be to provide real flowered leis for all. Matthew reported that the MC for the evening will be Peter Yanagihara the former Hilo DJ .

b. Finance: Mel reported that estimated expenditure for both nights other than for food and drinks will be around $2,700. Thus, additional expenditure for leis should not be a problem if we need to purchase for 99 cents each. The committee agreed that they would have no objections to using funds to purchase leis if needed.

c. Banquet Night (Saturday, July 27): Aloha reported that she and Ida Mae will serve as Co-MC's for the evening and will coordinate with Fabulous Woody to keep the party fun and are still welcoming some grad entertainment such as the elementary school groups, etc. Committee members present were designated to be the recruiters for their respective elementary schools to do some group entertainment. Additional expenses may be involved to put up balloons, etc. which the committee approved.

d. Golf (Friday, July 26 at Hickam Air Force Base golf course): Bobo reported for Les that all 40 slots are expected to be filled and that another golf committee meeting will be held upon his return from Japan to finalize details.

e. Prizes: Because of these down economic times, Ralston encouraged all to bring any prizes that they can get to assist the committee. Ken and Ben have secured some prizes, but the committee may need to purchase some as well.

f. Hotel (Ala Moana): Arlene reported that 11 rooms are confirmed to date and that 15 confirmations are needed in order to get the reduced rate for hospitality suite of $99 for 1-bedroom suite, and $195 for 2-bedroom suite. The committee agreed that we would book the 2-bedroom hospitality suite for 3 nights. Arlene will try to get a further discount if possible.

g. Registration: Naomi reported that over 100 persons have registered to date including all committee members expected to be in attendance. Committee members present shared the results of the personal phone calls made to encourage grads to attend. It was emphasized that we should continue to personally call names on our phone list because the personal touch made a difference.

h. Souvenir: Patsy reported that shirt orders are slow and that we should promote these shirts as we call the grads on our call list. It was noted that shirts will also be available for sale at the reunion events if not pre-ordered.

i. Reception: Naomi reported for June (Takahashi) Iki that the committee met and has all in order for the events. They are awaiting names of all attendees to produce special nametags.

2. Other Business: Input was received from some grads in Hilo that perhaps greater consideration be given to celebrating our 50th class reunion in Hilo rather than Las Vegas or elsewhere since most of the grads still reside in Hilo and that this may provide for greater attendance. The committee suggested that a poll be taken among grads at our upcoming reunion events since the 45th reunion is also scheduled to be in Hilo.

3. Next Meeting: Tuesday, June 18th - 6 p.m. at Ralston's

4. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 9:05 p.m..

Respectfully submitted,
Donna (Saito) Hoshide
