6:35 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Newsletter and reunion mailouts were folded, stapled, stamped and labeled in preparation for mailing.

Call to order: Meeting was called to order at 9:12 p.m. Ken Sakai was welcomed as a new attendee. The minutes were approved with the following verification Arlene Yoshizumi will help mainland attendees with their travel accommodations if asked.

Items Discussed and Actions Taken:

1. Committee Reports

a. Banquet/Hotel: Arlene will present the menu choices at the next meeting and a decision of entrees will be made. Ralston verified information about the 10% penalty for hotel cancellation.

b: Finance: Melvin reported that everything is all on track. Receipts for postage and reprints were submitted for reimbursement. For the next meeting, need to find out where the money from the Hilo committee is. Dennis Ueyama needs to be contacted.

c. Golf: Michael Chun reported that the golf tournament will take place at Hickam Air Force Base Mamala Golf Course on July 26. His brother Stuart will be assisting with the arrangements. Future mail out will include registration form.

d. Prizes/Donations: Kenneth Sakai resigned. He is now part of the Hospitality Committee. In deference to his recent illness, he was not contacted by Ron Hirano to be on this committee.

e. Hospitality: Room will be open for two nights with the possibility of 3 nights, beginning Thursday night. In the next newsletter, Bobo requests that an appeal for donations be made, especially from outer islands: e.g., potato chips, cookies, Maui mochi/manju, eggplant, and for beer and soda. For a money maker, we may have Ralstons sushi bar and Alma doing shiatsu.

f. Grad Night: A proposal was made to adjust the golf start time so attendees can be at Waialae Country Club at 6:00 PM. There will be food stations, liquor to be sold by scripts. End time will be 10:30 PM. There is lots of parking, but dont park under the trees. Beware of bird doodoo!!

Program for Grad Night Michael Nakasone has agreed to play the piano for dinner music. Donna will confirm with Peter Yanagihara whether he will sing. Other suggestions for grad entertainers: Daniel Vicente (jazz), Michael Peyton, Mark Yasuhara.

g. Banquet Night: Donna called Aloha Makaimoku Gellert who reported that she will be at next meeting with her report. Also on her committee: Cheryl Araujo Tuzon and Ida Mae Fong Hamasaki.

h. Reception: Herbert had nothing to report.

i. Souvenir/Memorabilia: Byron asked that we wait for Patsy who is working on memorabilia. He suggested possibly duplicating the Viking logo from the last reunion but no decision was made. Information needed will be in the next flyer.

j. Phone Tree: Beryl contacted Craig a week and a half prior to this meeting to email a reminder to committee members of this meeting. Only those without email addresses were contacted by phone. Ralston made an appeal that chairs need to be present at every meeting, or at least send a representative.

k. PR Committee: Michael Chun will assist chairman Craig, since he is "low man" on the golf committee, and reported that Craig issued an appeal for help, such as free announcements in the newspaper and T.V. Craig will follow-up.

l. Newsletter: Ralston reported that he was nagged by his Executive Assistant, Naomi, to do the newsletter. He thanked all present for helping with the mail out. The next newsletter should be out by the end of September or early October. Registration forms with information on costs will be included in this newsletter with monies due by April 2002. The question was asked whether we may register by email but the concern was whether monies will be received.

2. Next Meeting: 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 29. Anyone not able to be present must email his/her report to Naomi Nakayama Matsumoto. It is critical that there be a substantive report from all committees, as the reunion is only 10 months away. Need input for next mailout.

3. Meeting adjourned at 10:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Irene Akiyama Yamamoto
