Ron Hirano was given special kudos for his overwhelming generosity of food and attendees were encouraged to take mango when they went home. Minutes of the May 12th meeting were approved with the following corrections: Ralston and Matthew Daog are designated co-chairpersons of the 2002 reunion committee Dennis Ueyama's name was inadvertently excluded from the finance committee Items Discussed and Actions Taken: 1. Assignments: Ron was given the responsibility to notify Russell Okata and Ken Sakai of their committee assignments. 2. Committee Reports: a. Banquet Night, Hotel Accomodations (Arlene Yanagihara Yoshizumi, Ralston Nagata): Inquiries made by Ralston and Arlene with regard to room rates at the Hawaii Prince and Ala Moana Hotel resulted in the following: Hawaii Prince -- $135 per night with rates subject to change; Ala Moana Hotel -- $99 per night with mountain view, $109 per night with ocean view, $129 per night deluxe torch ginger room (details on this accommodation to be forthcoming). The above rates do not include taxes. Banquet buffet rates for the night of July 27th are as follows: Hawaii Prince -- $42; Ala Moana Hotel -- $27. The above rates do not not include tax and tip. Comments by Ralston and Arlene with regard to hotel accommodations and banquet facilities at the Ala Moana Hotel were positive and attendees were informed that both the hotel and banquet rooms have been renovated since our last reunion there 10 years ago. The decision was made that we would hold Banquet Night at the Ala Moana Hotel from 6:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. on July 27th, 2002, and a flyer would be sent to all classmates informing them of the particulars. A discussion followed regarding: 1) blocking off rooms on one floor of the Ala Moana Hotel and possibly the floor below so as not to disturb other hotel guests who are not reunion attendees; 2) reserving the hospitality room for three days and working on getting a discount; 3) total number of rooms to be blocked off (present # is 45). The answers to these questions will be forthcoming after the flyers are sent out next month and the responses begin pouring in. The committee members were informed that any liquor provided in the hospitality room would be brought by the attendees themselves. b. Air Fares (Arlene Yanagihara Yoshizumi): Arlene informed the group that there are no guarantees on mainland air fares at this early date; mainland attendees need to arrange their own airfare, however she would be willing to help. She will post her email address. c. Grad Night (Donna Saito Hoshide): Donna reported that the Waialae Country Club is available for our use on Grad Night -- Friday, July 26th, 2002. The option was given to have the gathering poolside or utilize one of the club's rooms. The majority agreed to hold it indoors to encourage mingling. Donna will work with the catering manager to provide us with a menu which will include food stations presenting Japanese, Chinese and Hawaiian cuisine plus a dessert station. She will try to keep the cost of the food to no more than $30 including tax and tip. Since Waialae County Club has a piano, it was suggested that we ask Michael Nakasone to provide musical entertainment and invite Peter Yanagihara to sing. A discussion on how to obtain monies for expenses incurred resulted in a phone call to Gerald Nagata in Hilo asking him how to obtain funds. Gerald will check to see if Ralston has the authority to write checks off the account and if not, who does. Dennis Ueyama will follow through on this matter. d. Event Registration (Naomi Nakayama Matsumoto, Irene Akiyama Yamamoto, Beryl Kam Lau): Naomi reported that the committee will be using the 35th reunion address list to send out the first flyer. e. Phone Tree (Beryl Kam Lau): Craig will assist Beryl in reminding all reunion committee members of the next meeting through email. Attendees to the reunion meetings will receive a call by telephone only if they are not "connected" to the internet. f. Public Relations (Craig Miyamoto): Craig reminded everyone to send him classmates email addresses. Email addresses may be sent to Craig at [email protected] or [email protected]. Ralston requested Craig send him instructions on how to log on to the Hilo High School bulletin board website, which gives information on the ongoing activities of the reunion committee. Ron Hirano suggested possible ways of getting the word out about our upcoming reunion, e.g. using KIKU community calendar, events calendar of our local newspaper and radio stations. g. Newsletter (Ralston): Ralston will author the first newsletter to be completed before the next meeting. Deadline for entries to be included in the newsletter is July 13th. Reunion committee members will collate mail-outs at the next meeting which will include a newsletter, flyer on banquet, hotel accommodations, car rentals, air fare and instructions on how to log on to the Hilo High School bulletin board website. The first mail-out will be sent to all graduates; thereafter all communication will be via email. Those graduates who do not have email and express an interest in attending the reunion will continue to receive information in the mail. A request was made by Ralston to all 40th reunion committee members...please, if you are unable to attend a meeting due to unforeseen circumstances, send a representative from your committee so the reunion committee may be apprised of your progress s... or give Ralston a call ... thank you. h. Golf Outing (Ron Hirano, Les Hoshide): A committee is in the process of being formed. Michael Chun was recruited at this meeting. A consideration is being given to offer two days of golfing. i. Reception Table (June Takahashi Iki): June reports she has enlisted Byron Muramatsu, Charlyn Nakamoto Chang, Betsy Tsugawa Kwock, Herbert Hamada and Judy Nishizaki Tom to help on this committee. j. Souvenirs (Patsy Onuma Nakamura): Patsy is working on getting polo shirts for the reunion attendees. The design on the shirt has yet to be determined. However, she suggested "Vikings" be somehow interwoven into the design. A discussion arose regarding the hiring of a photographer to take a class picture but no decision was made. Patsy is looking into compiling a booklet to include pertinent information about each graduate including name, residence, marital status. It could also include some significant high school recollection by each graduate and whom of our classmates have passed away. She will research the potential cost of all of the aforementioned items. 3. Next meeting: 6:00 P.M., Friday, July 27, 2001 at Ralston's. Please bring a potluck item to share with the group. 4. Meeting adjourned at 9:55 P.M. Respectfully submitted, |
