The Handfasting

The Bride
Well, after five years we finally made it legal... on August 26, 2000 we tied the knot.
The ceremony was held in our backyard as the sun set over the hazy mountains in the background. Co-officiating were a Druid Priestess and and a tie-dyed Metaphysical Minister (both very close friends). The proceedings drew on Irish customs and NeoPagan innovation, and were the talk of the town and those who attended for months!
On this page you will find many of the pictures from the wedding and reception and a little bit about the ceremony...
Enjoy!!!

The background
Well! Bill and I got this idea to have a small wedding and that  we could do all of the cooking and planning and decorating ourselves!
Bill would have been very happy to just walk into the woods and have the ceremony, but I had other ideas. I had this picture in my head of an arch covered in moon flowers. at the entrance to the garden. The garden of course being filled with flowers and that all of our dress would be hand made as well as all of the other decorations, oh yes and the food! Somehow I thought this could be accomplished in the time we allowed ourselves to prepare.
Well Bill's shirt I was able to make and that was the extent of my sewing confidence. The arch covered in moon flowers got nipped in the bud by a swarm of hungry ducks. All of the other decorations and food were done by us and looking back, I don't know how we survived!
The flower arrangements were done with wildflowers from the area, as well as my bouquet,  Andrea's, and the boutonnieres. I did these with some help from my Mom the Thursday before the big day. I spent a few sleepless nights creating my headpiece and Andrea's, those done with silk flowers (we decided on silk due to the bee factor in August). My Mom was a goddess, she came up a week before and helped with the cooking, decorating, the running, the running, and keeping us sane! The day we went to get the silver service...we got into Albany fine, then on the way home Mom's car broke down. What a day to remember! She had it towed to our house, silver service and all instead of a garage so we wouldn't be set behind in our schedule. The day of the wedding she and my cousin Chris set out to get the keg of Killians! Three hours later and a search for a place other than the one we ordered from (who didn't actually have it), they returned with it!
The food
Well let me say that if you've never catered a wedding, yours shouldn't be the first! The food was wonderful, but there was no way we could have gotten it done without the help of my mom, Linda... especially Linda, Andrea, Chris, my cousin Chris and pretty much everyone who was there! Linda spent much time in the kitchen and really helped the day go smoothly! Linda's an angel and definitely earned her wings that day! Everything was homemade from the mini cheese cakes thanks to Renee (My Uncle Eddie found a new love that day). to home made Baklava, breads, herbed butters, salad dressings, rice salad....I'll let you see the menu!
The ceremony
It was the most beautiful ceremony I've attended. I'm probably a little prejudice, but it was done by friends, so it was very meaningful. Nancy is the druid priestess that put it together and Christopher is the metaphysical minister that did some awesome drumming and told everyone how we met. Our closest family, our closest friends...we couldn't ask for anything more beautiful!
In general
Probably the most memorable things for everyone who attended was one of the gifts we received. Renee and Jim snuck into our barn two beautiful cashmere goats...truly a country wedding! Bill knew, but I had no idea until after the ceremony when they brought me down ot the barn! I almost cried, they were amazing. Another part to remember were the cars that paused to watch and the one man who pulled up to watch most of the ceremony. Being a small town, he stopped a week later to tell us how much he enjoyed it and how beautiful it was. The day before the wedding we had swarms of dragonflies just outside our front door and the day of we had a snake in our bathroom, all of the creatures attended!!
