Hillside School Cultural Arts Programs

2005 – 2006

The following are the Cultural Arts programs that the PTA will be providing this year.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact either Kris Boni at 994-2641 ([email protected]) or Karen Wood at 740-1855 ([email protected]).  Teachers will receive study guides a week before the performances.

November 7 – Bash the Trash – grades K – 5.  Show times: 8:30 – 9:20 grades 3 – 5, 9:30 – 10:20 grades K – 2.

Bash the Trash is a witty, educational and interactive program of music, recycling, science and trash.  Using instruments built from found objects, the three Bash the Trash performers demonstrate the science of sound (acoustics) with weird instruments such as the Bendjo, Singing Bowl, Strawmbone and the Balloon Flute.  The safe use of materials is emphasized as students discover how to make simple instruments.

February 13 – Shakespeare LIVE! A Midsummer Night’s Dream – grades 3 – 5 only.  Show time: 1:00 – 2:00pm.

Shakespeare LIVE, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s most effective and far-reaching education program, will present a visually dynamic abridged production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

March 13 – Susanmarie Cunningham, A Family Album – grades K – 5.  Show times: 8:30 – 9:15 grades K, 2 & 4, 9:30 – 10:15 grades 1, 3 & 5.

A Family Album is a hilariously playful yet poignant talk about growing up.  The startling life sized soft sculptures worn by Susanmarie and student volunteers are used to illustrate a variety of important lessons-learning to be a good friend, tempering romance with wisdom, the importance of self reliance, using your own uniqueness to build self esteem, and how to be happy and proud of yourself.

May 1 – 5 – Poetry Alive!  In School Residence – entire school assembly on morning of first day and afternoon of last day, workshops for grades 4 & 5 throughout the week.

Poetry Alive! is a weeklong in-school residency that culminates in a student poetry performance at the end of the week.  Students learn poetry, performance skills, and how to work with each other to achieve a common goal.
