Ellis
The name Ellis in the english form means:
from the medieval given name Elis, the normal vernacular form of
Elijah (Gk Eliasm from Hebr. Eliyahu 'Jehovah is God'). This name was
born by a biblical prophet, but its poplarity among Christians in the
Middle Ages was a result of its adoption by various early saints,
as for example a 7th century bishop of Syracuse and a 9th century Sp. martyr.
In Wales this surname seems to have absorbed forms derived
from the W personal name Elisedd, a deriv. of elus kindly, benevolent.

The Ellis families lived and worked in Walker County, Georgia.
Over the years they lived in Eagle Cleft, Ericks Gap, Dry Valley
and Rossville.
All of these towns being rural areas, the Ellis' were
generations of farmers.
Most of Walker County is still rural today, with industries
here and there. I am not certain how many of the farms still
present are actual working farms. Or if any of the Ellis descendants are
working farmers. But the descendants are still largly living in the area.
I would like to add that a very helpful and kind person
gave me the majority of the census information. I have
documented this information for myself however.
If I could remember his name I would give him his credit due. Thanks.
