Newfoundland, Part II
Sept 28, 2004 Gambo to Clarenville
109.8 km td 8,541.8 km
A casual day through Terra Nova National park turns into an exhausting struggle as we are buffetted by fierce headwinds and endless hills.
Sept 29, 2004 Clarenville to Whitbourne
106.2 km td 8,648.0 km

Second to last day and it starts to sink in that this trip is almost over and we will actually accomplish this dream from start to finish.  Our legs are ready for a break, our bodies are tired, but we are still somewhat nostalgic that this trip is coming to an end.

The day passes as usual, with loud trucks, endless hills,  lakes, rocks, and other sights of the great boreal forest, a token flat tire, friendly locals, two breakfasts, a gas station stop, occaisional honks from our 'fan club', and more of the usual.  This day will blend into the rest of our days, each one unique but similar enough that memories will blur.
Sept 30, 2004 Whitbourne to Cape Spears to St. John's, Newfoundland
127.0 km td 8,774.9 km

The day rolls by like a dream; it is hard to comprehend that this is the last.  We pedal hard all morning, knowing that the rains from the remnants of hurricane Jean will be upon us by afternoon (sound likes deja vu?!).

The hills out to Cape Spears are punishing, but we refuse to give up- like the last km of a marathon, you never know if you're going to finish until you cross the finish line!  Finally we arrive at the end of the road- the most easterly point in North America!  We are elated- it is over!  What an accomplishment, too great to fathom, too much effort to comprehend.

We spend the next hour celebrating- the photos, phone calls to parents, talking with other sightseers, and I even find a narrow rock beach to go for a quick swim.
After the dust settles we still have 20 km and three major hills to head into St John's.  Sure enough, the rains start for the last half hour, and we arrive at our B&B exhausted and soaked.  But finished!!!!
