| A long and grueling start to the trip! We awake later than expected and don't dip our bikes in the pacific until 10:30 AM. Pat Hikisch sees us off and graciously takes our panniers for the first stage to Terrace. Our 35 degree heat has been replaced by the steady drizzle only fitting for our start in Prince Rupert. The day meanders by as we drift up the mighty and misty Skeena river basin. Our outing becomes an obsession for endless food stops, and assessing the various aches and pains that one must grudgingly accept on day 1 of any endurance feat. My bladder keeps filling at such a rate I begin to wish for the catheter my VCH workmates had given me for the trip. A few hours later it is the inflatable invalid ring I wished I could be sitting on as my behind starts to scream. We arrive in Terrace at 8 pm after 10 hours on the road- Andrea proclaims with exhaustion she will stop at the first restaurant we see- just my luck, it is the local pub! With Guinness in hand and Eurocup on the tube, the miles slip away. We spend the night in a warm house as our longtime family friends the Sheridans welcome us. Sleep will feel great. My bike seat will not tomorrow. |
