Guadalupe Mountains National Park Jan. '02
This trip was great!  Jon, Jeff, Jason, and I went to Texas in January to do a little desert backcountry camping in the dry mountains of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.  This was a typical view and it does the beauty of the area no justice.  We hiked about 26 miles with a top elevation over 8,000 feet.  That is fairly high when starting at about 3,000.  We drove to Texas without stopping and arrived in about 26 hours.  The second night we had wind gusts of over 70 m.p.h!  It was impressive to say the least.
Here is a picture of a Mule Deer (the 4-legged guy on the right).  This is a wild deer in the park looking for a handout.  After all who wanted to posed with the fellow, Jason repetedly chased it off,  Until it stopped begging.   We saw multiple other animals also including deer, javelinas, possible elk, roadrunner, and a skunk.
Here is a nice picture from about halfway up our climb.  If you look close you can see the swithchbacks that the trail takes.
Here is a picture of a Javelina.
Three guys who have no idea that they are about to begin a very strenuous climb.
And yes we even got snow in Texas.  Felt just like home.  Well not exactly.  Desert backpacking was a truly unique experience and doing it in the mountains made it that much more difficult.  Luckily I had three good friends to enjoy the fun with.
